My turn to winge

Yeah, the SubStar thing again.
Their policy update has fully dropped and updated, and it's... not good for me or my content.
You can view it here: https://subscribestar.adult/prohibited_content

So no cub, non-con, dub-con, extreme, gore, etc. And even anthro seems to be on watch, which is stupid since that's something like half of their userbase or more. And Feral and Pony artists are just straight fucked.

I'm not dropping SubStar as my subscription / patron service right now, at least until I find something better that works. However, I'm currently in the process of backing up and migrating all my content over to the discord server. Namely my extra stuff, like my weekly updates and lore drops. All my stories are still going public as normal. Early Access will also only be through the Discord now.

Nothing here will change, of course. You'll all still get my stories as normal.

With this, so many other sites clamping down on content, or straight up shutting down, and so much censorship on the rise (and everything else going on in the world), it feels like I and other creators been under constant attack for a while now. It's almost enough to make me want to give up and walk away. But as I told a friend, I'm not listening to what a bunch of faceless assholes dictating what I can and can't enjoy or make. It just... sucks. And it's so tiring.

...I hate the future.

I believe Discord isn't very cub friendly and there's the new adult rules.

Telegram might be better, but people have problems there too.

There's other alternatives though that are not as centralized. Matrix is a Discord analog and a decentralized system. You can run your own server if nothing is to your liking. And for something like Twitter there's Mastodon. Baraag is a Mastodon instance.

Matrix won't have integration the same way discord does, and I'm hardly a programmer so I don't want to go learn how to make something play to my liking. I barely know how to make Discord do what I want most of the time. Once Matrix gets more widely used and gets integrations, I'll worry about it then.

I also refuse to use twitter or anything like it. I hate their layouts and their lack of a gallery style option. Even the few that have them suck.

Telegram is okay, but you can't have different channels for different content, and you have the same lack of gallery or even look up options, so posts have a chance of getting lost within minutes if there's more than four people talking.

On top of all of this stuff, I'm a writer, not a visual artist. Most twitter-style places are fucking shit for writers. I'd still have to host everything off-site anyway, just like I'm doing right now with Discord.

And no, I will NOT use AO3. I have a personal vendetta against the people that created that site. Because I knew them, and they're cunts.

TG is having a huge crackdown on 18+ chats too. Not even cub or nc or feral, just 18+ furry in general is getting masssssss deletions and blocks.

We're swiftly approaching a world where if we want to have a platform we'll have to self-host it...

Time to start learning TOR I guess...

Tor is just a fancy VPN.

1. Download from https://www.torproject.org/download/
2. You're done.

It's just Firefox with special VPN sauce. Some stuff works with it, some sites refuse to talk to it. If you have a problem, hit Ctrl+Shift+L to try a new exit point.

I already have tor and a VPN. Was a joke about how I guess I'm going to need to make the actual D-Gen darksite at some point if this shit keeps up.

Oh... God, no. I was 100% joking. I'll just stop posting and die in obscurity before I try and start my own website. I don't have the energy or mental fortitude to even attempt it. I'll leave that to people who have the energy and gumption for such an endeavor. If that becomes the only option, then the front end of a moving bus has long since looked like a more appealing opportunity.

that current "future" has no future. The trajectory of world politics goes toward one or more cataclysmic events followed by a restart. Not inevitably so, but with steady progress as long as the three largest superpowers are being ruled by egocentric assholes.

There is that old saying - "if you want something done right, you need to do it yourself" -- typically used in the context of outsourcing.  But that also goes for art and subscription portals - and for "future"

We're already well on the path to the cyberpunk dystopia, with megacorps running the world instead of governments. Just without the neon, chrome, and fun distractions. It's the most boring version of that dystopia. Which is why I hate this future.

Oh, yeah, that.

Yes, definitely not needed for the time being, self-hosting will do just fine. But I agree, things are looking concerning lately.

Actually, scratch that. We're turning into the Demolition Man future. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years someone tries to put a bill out to fine swearing.

Bo Burnham was right.

There's also a lot of parallels to Orwells 1984 - except that "big brother" now is going to be a Deep LLM.

Orwell:  “If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face—for ever.”

If you want a good picture of human history as a whole, the same image applies. We've been blessed to be in a moment where it wasn't pressing quite so hard. But all will return to as it has always been sooner or later. The status quo will be maintained.

to torture that image a bit more, to use that boot in the face to full effect, you have to occasionally lift it a bit, just so you can smash it back down with renewed force.

But I see the state of human society as a chaotic system that has stable attractors. Some of them are particularly shitty. If you let it run without putting effort in to make things better it will invariably end up in such a shitty state.

Preventing that takes active effort to make the world a better place. If too many people don't give a fuck and don't care, the boot comes stamping down yet again.

Power corrupts. People with the best intentions will still need to make sacrifices and compromises to make that change. And the people that replace them have to want to keep those changes while staying in power. Eventually, staying in power is all that matters.

And you know where they say the road paved with good intentions leads.

Humans are no use alone. Only groups are strong. But groups need rules and cohesion.
But people like to bend and bypass rules for their own gain, so you need some sort of enforcement.

The issue is, some individuals think big. They seek to change the rules in their favour and then use the same enforcement to ensure they stay in power.

It's that last thing, and these kind of people that need to be fought. Its the bad rules that only benefit few who gain, to the cost of many. Because its these that cause progress to stumble and empires to crumple.

They say power corrupts, and yes there's such a tendency.

But the worst leaders, the real scum, the kind of people that destroy countries and cause world wars - those are typically people who seek power because they are already corrupt.

And this is something that can be seen in advance, fought in advance and prevented from happening.

Power over people requires helpers. No one is strong alone. The bad guys of the world need thousands of numb-minded henchmen that try to tell themselves they are doing the right thing, when in truth they only cement the power of a single asshole or a group of assholes, and do the dirty work for them.

all they need to do is wake up and stop

I think 1984 was as a prediction as well as a warning.  I'm no sure to what degree it's been used as a playbook or if its just a logical conclusion of certain developments when you extrapolate.  But Chinese social credits for example definitely seem to be a page from the "playbook".
