As someone who sucks at drawing, I agree. I'd rather try to draw my character as a badly made stick figure rather than feed the artwork I made/others made for me to an AI and get a tortured homunculus.

why not commision an actually artist instead? real art + you support an actual artist instead of someone writing words to have A I "create" something i mean you can do that probably on your own no need to pay someone for that

I think the best route is to research trustworthy artists who are consistent with pumping out actual commissions on a regular basis. And I'll even go a step further and recommend my friend Arleigh.
Oof, yeah. I know EXACTLY what it's like to get scammed. One time 12 years ago, I commissioned someone to make a plush of my college mascot (there were no official plushes of him back then), and they said it would be done within a month or two. Six months and a billion b.s. excuses later, still no plush. They started ghosting me. Suddenly, after I demanded a refund, they stopped ghosting me and told me, "Only a partial refund." I said, "I'll see you in small claims court", and only THEN did I get my refund.
No, seriously, this person would prioritize making MLP plushes for conventions and make a million excuses like "oh, my mother got sick, oh, my dog broke his leg, oh, my basement got flooded, oh this, oh that". Oh, sure, they could've been telling the truth, but it didn't stop them from making MLP plushes for conventions and finishing other projects taken AFTER my project. This was on DeviantArt by the way, when I wrote under the "projects" section of their forum seeking a plush artist. I didn't go approaching plush artists individually, but rather they approached me. 🤦♂️
So trust me when I say, I've been scammed before many times, with that mascot plush being the worst one. So I understand what you mean. Hard earned money spent on art, only to get nothing in return. It's frustrating. It's why I've worked hard to improve and continue to work hard to improve my art skills. Not for opening for comms, but so I can make what I want in just the way I want it.
