Discord Alternatives?

If anyone can suggest discord alternatives that will be nice.
I'm currently weighing the options for each one and seeing which people are flocking to.

Here's my current list so far:

Root

Pros:
Doesn't require age verification through ID or face recognition.
Allows NSFW servers as long as they are private.
You can group your friends list into categories.
Voice Chat and Streaming
You can import your discord server, roles and settings.

Cons:
No custom emojis.
Search is limited.
Mobile Application is unstable.
Not Open Source.
UI may be cumbersome for some.
Not totally private

Telegram:

Pros:
Guaranteed Private Group Chats and DMs.
Large Furry Presence.
Voice Chat and Streaming

Cons:
Banned in certain countries.
Large Illegal Activity Problem that caused a poor reputation.
Topics are Inferior to Channels.
Disorganized UI.

Stoat:

Pros:
Link Embeds
Custom Emojis
Most of Discords features

Cons:
Obvious Beta/Feels like a really early discord.
Lack of features like being able to edit permissions through categories

Fluxer:

Pros:
Unknown but seems to have everything discord has, so far.

Cons:
Attachments aren't permanent. (If someone posts something you really like, you'll have to download it to keep it.)
Would make a terrible application to save anything.
No open on start up on windows, yet.

Matrix:

Pros:
Completely Private (If you make your own server)

Cons:

You have to make your own server for privacy.
Needs some coding knowledge.
I have to pay money to host my own server.
May have low adaptation for users.

With regards to Matrix, you do not need to host your own server for privacy. It uses end to end encryption, so as long as you have it set up correctly on your end you can use any homeserver!

That said, the more homeservers out there, the better!

Stoat has updated 2-3 times since i downloaded it last weekend... I think the biggest con of it so far has been that like it doesn't auto scroll down when text chatting, which was kind of annoying. Also a big VOICE CHAT button that wont go away at all, just sort of stays there.

Also a massive con with Root is they are just like  discord and are recording and tracking everything you do--- which i think is a massive red mark for it.

I think stoat is the best alternative atm, but as i understand its an EU based company meaning they might be hit with the whole ID verification before its over.

TBH feels like we are damned if we do, and damned if we dont.

Telegram's auto-moderation is overagressive too. If you intend to advertise a TG channel you will have to deal with a constant stream of puriteens reporting and nuking your channel - which Telegram does completely automatically, then it takes days to get the account back if you ever do.

I've heard Stoat has a lot of back-end AI for moderation and monitoring, so it might be a turnoff for many as well. (It's still in 2nd place for me at the moment)

Matrix is an absolute nightmare to self-host presently.

Currently, Teamspeak is the top biller for me. You can self-host your own server to keep all your data secure, it's also end to end encrypted if I recall correctly. TS6 supports persistent messages, but you have to be connected to the server - which means you're in a voice channel - in order to communicate/etc via text. This can be worked around by having a "Online but not in voice" channel that mutes everyone by default but there is a learning curve there. The biggest hurdle is the lack of 'it's always online' behavior, you have to go connect when you start up for the day

Im told fluxer is a good alternative i keep seeing stoat/revolt butbits allready had an AI controversy and it's features are underrated at this time.

Just tried to make a server in stoat and its VERY beta.
I can't change permissions by category, but have to do it by channel like old discord.

Yeah its not good try fluxer the devs where working on it for five years and just opened it up to the public. It federated so none of that discord shit can happen.

FLuxer will depend on how many people willing to make accounts and move there.

I was passed this spreadsheet recently if it helps.

My issue with Root was it's funding is supposedly from an LLM company which gives me privacy quandries

REVOLT has been renamed to STOAT.

Stoat (revolt) is pretty much an open-source Discord clone that was made by people who were pissed that Discord was introducing shit like "nitro" subscriptions and wanting to go public on a stock exchange IPO offering and caring more about investors than users.

Telegram ALSO wants to go on the stock exchange with an IPO either this year or 2027, so they will likely do the same shit Discord is now in about a year because their Israeli investors want to milk it for all it is worth.

Stay far away from any chat program that is a major company or has "investors" as they all go to shit eventually.
