I promised Naomi I would stop doing this, but I have to get this off my chest. A lot has happened since I last made a recording. So much has happened, personally, professionally.
When I first enlisted in the police service, I had a mentor who taught me that there would eventually, inevitably, be that one case that haunts you. The one that keeps you up at night as you wonder, time and again, if you did everything right, what you could have done differently, the people you could have saved, the ones that got away...
I was no fool. Even after I got kicked out of the service and I became a PI, I knew it would happen one day; I just didn't know what form that case would take.
Well, I think it finally happened.
It's been about a month since the conclusion of this case, and every night since, I've been thinking about the outcome. It's midnight right now, and I decided to make use of the lost hours of sleep and get it off my chest with this audio log. Naomi is currently... well, she already knows much of what happened, and I don't think she's keen on hearing the rest right now, so the PDA will be my listener for this. Who knows, maybe I'll tell my kids this story one day.
