It's not about child safety AT ALL. It's about collecting personal info to sell to data brokers, and there's also probably pressure from the government to do it, so people can be tracked and monitored easier. Discord claims that the face and ID verification photos stay on your device, are only used once, and can be deleted immediately after. But just the simple fact that there were IDs stolen in that data breach proves they were saving personal info on their end. Mainly from countries where governments have mandated it, like the UK.
Speaking of which, I heard the way this works is they have an AI (of course) scan a photo of your face and if it thinks you're under 18, then it mandates that you show ID. Or you can bypass all of that by just giving them your ID. In the UK where this has already become mandatory, I've heard of people getting around the facial scan with shit like Halloween masks and fake photos, and the AI they use is stupid enough that it works. So you could give that a try. Me personally though, I'd rather just leave. I've been trying to get completely off of Discord since they took an anti cub stance. Although I've had close friends keeping me there who weren't willing to migrate, until maybe now.

Yeah, I agree with what you’re saying. That’s also why I’ve never bought Nitro — I don’t trust Discord with my banking information, especially given how weak their security stance has been. After the data breach last year, I was actually relieved that I never added payment details to my account. I do understand the mistrust because it is not about child safety (In my opinion too) its more about tracking and data hoarding.

I'm extremely reluctant to pay for ANYTHING online. That's why I don't get commissions and stuff from people (well that and I just don't have the money anyway). Call me old or a right winger or whatever, but for me, cash is king. As far as Nitro, I never bothered because I just don't go for gimmicks like that, and that's all it is, a gimmick. Pay a monthly subscription just to have a fancy avatar and banner and join certain servers. I don't even really do servers on Discord. Just talk to a few people in DMs, and I never used it for gaming either.

Telegram is okay for right now, but the best thing to do is look for an open source, end to end encrypted messenger. Open source being crucial, because if it's open source, it's not a company, it can't be bought and sold, and it doesn't fall under the jurisdiction of any particular country or government. Meaning it's safe from shit like this. And if it's end to end encrypted, you shouldn't have to worry about governments and tech companies and other shit spying on you either.

Sadly, I'll have to either convince my groupos to either migrate or I'll just stop playing if this actually goes through. I don't care about social life if it means some third party company could sell my BIOMETRICS to some hackers so they can pretend to be me and do shit on my behalf, either smearing my name or fucking up some presonal stuff like bank accounts and shit.
