Switching to Linux

I had enough with Windows 11 already, so tired of being slow having a 10th intel core i7 with 64Gb of ram, a 1 TB ssd and a nvidia quadro rtx3000. Those updates are so constant that keep ruining my drawings when i work on SAI, those updates forcefully restart my pc and everything i worked on drawings is just gone, happened to me so many times that i had enough. Those pop ups showing the cloud thing, the xbox pass altough being an activated OS. I mean, f* Microslop and their windows OS.

Since will move to Linux, Which Distro should be good to me, just for browsing, drawing and play on Emulators, this is what i want only.

Right now i have Mint and it runs everything great in a Thinkpad P50 with a Xeon Processor from 2016, i mean, everything runs really fast, even wii U emulator runs so great on it

In drawing regard im using Krita, it have a lot of stuff to draw, and thankfully my pen tablet works awesome with Linux, but i need learn to use Krita though. Need give a shot to Gimp.

For browsing i use Firefox, after deleting everything about their AI crap.

I just need some suggestions to use Mint or other distro that works like windows was at least in win 10, or just general stuff to know about Linux.

Thanks for reading This :)

uh i kinda use linux so i have some advice

1. wayland on nvidia has become largely usable compared to a few years back. so feel free to use that unless if you really need x11, albeit gnome and kde are in process of phasing out x11 support.
2. you should stay away from ubuntu as it has weird shit in it like bundling firefox as a snap which causes issues in the long term
3. fedora in my experience completely breaks after trying to update major releases, so i'd suggest staying away from it (maybe bazzite has less issues but i havent tried that)
4. arch linux isn't that complicated if you read the wiki, but its not as easy as what most people claim it to be. so perhaps stay away from it if you don't know much.
5. linux mint is a pretty good beginner distro, so thats a good choice.
6. gimp recently had a major release last year, i don't know how much usable it is but it's way better than what it was before from what i've heard. i'd suggest staying on krita however.
7. unrelated but if you need windows for anything in the future i strongly suggest you check out one of the ltsc iot releases. you'll have to pirate it but it doesn't have any of the xbox/copilot/bing/onedrive bullshit

No need to pirate windows anything if it was previously installed on the system. Lookup the program Rufus for making usb's. It has an option to create a live windows usb from an iso that they previously had a license for. Not to mention 10, and 11 let you run without one if you can tolerate the nagging. Rufus says it requires windows, but I run it in wine.

i meant pirating windows iot ltsc as in activating windows iot ltsc through massgrave's mas script
whitepawrolls

Ehh I wouldn't bother. I'd deal with the nagging. Only problem is I can't find an iso.
MushyMuffin

the "nagging" in question makes everything slower, and its worse on windows 11 24h2+ because the codebase now has vibe-coded bullshit in it, meaning a heap of bugs have showed up because theres no more quality control for some reason.

as for an iso, you may find one by searching for "windows 10 ltsc 2021 iso" or "windows 11 ltsc 2024 iso"

One of the many reasons I'd never use 11. :)

the thing is consumer windows 10 got a lot of this bullshit backported before the EOL a few months back

Thank you for your suggestions, What is Wayland by the way? since waydroid emulator requires to get wayland but i dont have a idea to run it in the terminal, and waydroid keeps crashing, i have no idea how that works :P

I think i need swotch for another browser in future anyway, i just uninstall and install another one, i dont mind change for other browser, since Firefox added AI crap in their browser since november, i just think in switch to another.

Honestly if i need use Windows programs back again, it should be for SAI only, the rest of stuff, like Libre Office and many emulators works like a charm in the laptop im using now, and works even better.

You can, but the cinnamon version with wayland is still experimental.

I did it and the touchscreen of my laptop works even better with it, now i guess i need reinstall waydroid to see if it works, since it keeps looping, opening and closes, i guess because its experimental

if you look at your login for Mint you will see an option to change your desktop. You can select wayland cinnamon

I’ll be following you to Linux as soon as i can. Sad to see how the mighty Microslop has fallen.

Microslop is doubling down to their supporters everyday, i think this year many people will change their OS for sure

i use mint for browsing and drawing and it works great. it's very intuitive and has a similar layout to windows. the program wine is great for running windows programs on linux

Had to switch to Linux a few years ago when a security update from Windows nuked my SSD minutes later.
It messed it up so bad that I couldn't even format it.
Luckily I had a Linux bootable USB, and I used that to install it.

Linux Mint, Cinnamon.

Mostly the same, though installing programs at first will be a little weird. So far my biggest issue is being able to play my stream games. At the time, I could only play 10% of them.
My PCs been down for a while though. When I get it fixed, I'll try all the gaming tricks people have been claiming.

If you haven't looked in a while Steam now has a native client. Just make sure to turn on compatibility for windows titles, and I would recommend proton 9. That one works best for me.

of course Linux is not suited for windows only games, which sucks, but since i only use emulators for offline gaming is good enough to me
whitepawrolls

Actually it is if you use steam and compatibility mode.I use steam to play many windows only games. Even ones you have to install as non steam games. There is also another option for steam games if you have a good connection. You can stream them right from geforcenow.

I been on linux for years now. best thing I ever did, and since the steam deck came out that's linux based gaming on linux is super easy. Steam even has a linux native client. I also agree with others that you should try Mint first. It "just works" out of the box, and it's what I have been using for several years now. The ONLY thing I have found that don't work is games with kernel level anti cheat like League of Legend. If you have one of those I suggest you dual boot or have windows on usb.

i just want to go away with windows, if its there an option to get SAI working over Wine like kittydeer says, so i can get rid of windows forever ;)
whitepawrolls

I'd recommend if you want to use wine to get bottles from the software download. Much easier to setup than bare wine.

Been wanting to convert to Linux, and Mint seems to be the new top distro for beginners after Canonical went weird with Ubuntu; use Wine for those few Windows programs you can't get rid of.
Alternatively, pirate Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 as I have on my main gaming PC; it's just Windows 10 but sane, and gets security updates until 2032.

Literally the only reason I haven't swapped from Kubuntu to Mint is that Mint doesn't have a KDE Plasma version; you can get Mint with either Cinnamon (Mint's in-house DE) or XFCE.

DUDE! In my testing with live USBs and VMs, I found out that I really like KDE! :3

You know you can install it right? :)

I've also heard that hotswapping the DE like that would be a Bad Idea, soooo
whitepawrolls
3 months, 2 weeks ago
Don't know where you heard that, but I have done it in the past and know of others that have. what IS bad is installing 2 heavy DE's because it installs lots of aps. Best way to do it is use the XFCE version as it's the lightest, then install KDE Plasma.
Lunamann

Kubuntu~!! It's the distro I use and I'm never looking back
It's based on Ubuntu/Debian, which means everyone and their mother should be able to help you with what's going on under the hood; meanwhile, the Desktop Environment (which gives it a UI) that it uses, KDE Plasma, is THE best DE ever. KDE Plasma's dev team is also responsible for Krita, the best drawing program out there; Krita is native to Linux and actually boots faster there compared to Windows

Honestly, re: the whole "preinstalls Firefox as a snap which causes issues" thing, just uninstall it and install a Firefox fork in its place; I suggest getting flatpak compatibility anyways because Discord works better as a flatpak, and from there, get Librewolf or Waterfox.

I also switched to Linux Mint a few months ago. A lot of my fave programs like Libreoffice, GIMP, Blender 3D, OBS and Openshot all have Linux Packages for easy install. It took me several weeks to figure out how to get vortex mod manager to work, but I succeeded there as well. I still need to install some non-Linux programs like Unity and Moho, but I tested that in a virtual machine and they did work. All in all, it's a good replacement.

Needd learn a bunch more if it, i just need it for just watch internet and draw stuff, thats it, so mint suits well to me.

I just need to switch to another browser that is not Firefox since they adding AI crap.

Will give a shot to Gimp again, i drew many things with GIMP back in 2011 when i started posting drawings, but seems quite slow to me

Why can’t we learn to go backwards? 7 was better than ten and eleven and 8 was terrible

I still have Windows 7 on my laptop. Unfortunately, a lot of programs like Steam and Dolphin no longer support it.

i dont know about the security patches and that stuff affects to computers, i mean, why not go back to windows XP, i just want draw and browse the internet. But always the threat of hacking your computer by a hacker is always there to threaten you and for companies to do older pcs more useless to force you to get something new.

Well, will give a shot with Bottles or Wine to see if those works with my pen tablet, Wayland failed to recognize my pen tablet now.
