2025 Ends

The year has been... mostly terrible. The political situation here in America has left me legitimately scared for myself and everyone I love, as we're all everything this regime hates and wants to kill, deport, or marginalize.

I watched Ink Bunny, one of the few places remaining on the clear net that will accept the kind of art I want to make, devolve into a haven of Nazis and AI slop, as the owner and Admin was outed as a weirdo transphobe who, while not a full on fascist himself, is weirdly willing to tolerate them at the expense of everyone else on the site.

In my personal life; I got sick or injured so many times over the course of this year, which has forced me to face the reality that I'm getting old and my life time of poor health choices are finally catching up to me. Xp

The one good thing that's really happened to me; I took up art again in earnest, after having quit it more than ten years ago. I got my supplies out of moth balls and really started practicing and learning again. I've rediscovered my love for it, and have gotten so much better over the last year.

Hopefully I get to keep practicing art and getting better in 2026.

As the Counting Crows sang: "Maybe this year will be better than the last."

GreenReaper's stances have been known basically since he took over the site over a decade ago. There's been no change in how he thinks on the matter in the entire time. But I think it's important to note that while GreenReaper decides overall limits for what can be on the site, he's been pretty clear that hate and intolerance are not allowed on the site over the years, and he's never stopped us from removing a hateful person because of his own bad views.

There have been times where it has been difficult to keep up on moderation (and sometimes people see that as us allowing things) because of the sheer volume of issues and the small number of staff (at times, I had been the only staff member doing day-to-day moderation for 30000+ users a day), but we're finally past the point of being caught up, and we're eyeing improvements to the site.

Some of the guidance is the same as it always was: block the user and move on if you just disagree. But if someone is causing trouble, harassing people, or attacking others, those tickets should be resolved in a pretty timely manner and the offending users taken care of.

In my fifteen years staffing the site, I've literally never had more hope for it actually improving. We've struggled so hard to get ahead of all of the problems and be proactive. It's been a struggle at times having literally no one to discuss issues with on a peer level. But we've got a good, dedicated staff that are keeping the site clean, and we've got volunteers who are working on feature and layout improvements for the software.

I hope you can keep it up with your art, I hope you keep sharing it, and I hope the new year treats you better health wise. For all of our flaws, we're gonna keep doing our thing here.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to address my journal. I appreciate the service you and the other staff perform, even if we've not always seen eye to eye. You all execute a difficult but necessary office, and I want to express my gratitude for your hard work.

Thank you, as well, for your well-wishes toward my health, and kind words about my art.

I wish I could share your optimism about Ink Bunny, but I've always been a pessimistic person. And I think I'm pessimistic with due cause, here. Green Reaper was denying his site turning into a Nazi Bar even while it was visibly in the process of turning into a Nazi Bar when many artists abandoned it earlier this year. It's hard for me to believe someone that deep in denial can be wholly unbiased, or would have the perception to notice and root out more subtle forms of hatred.

Hate isn't always hurling slurs and obscenities while frothing at the mouth. Sometimes hate is using a calm, even tone to deny a people's place in history or right to exist, observing the letter of the rules of etiquette while wrapping barbarous ideas in a cheap cloak of civil disagreement. Subtle hate is using carefully chosen words to tell a people "I think you should all die" while making it sound as innocuous as "I think I prefer chocolate ice-cream." But most importantly, subtle hate uses careful packaging to make "I think everyone from group X should die" sound like a normal thing to believe.

But I hope you're correct about righting the ship that is Ink Bunny. It's an important creative outlet for me and I'd like to see it thrive.
