anyone knows good historical animes?

I hereby summon the collective knowledge of all nerds and geeks, following me.
I have a question.

is there even ONE good historical accurate non fantasy Anime, that places in the world wars? Or an actual medieval time?
What I mean is:
I don't want to see some aliens, magic and fantasy, monsters, girls transforming into ships or planes or tanks or anything else like that. Just some actual serious anime, that has the balls to tell a story from that time!

The only Anime I found so far is "Zipang". Sure it starts off with "fantasy" because a modern destroyer ship time travels back into the second world war pacific. But that is allready everything fantasy. Then it's just a modern ship with realistic people and equipment in a war where both sides are basicly their enemys. Sadly that anime died half way though.

Is there any other series that is acceptable for a history lover?

I mean why is there no anime about thehundret years war (Jeanne D'Arc)?
There are so many interesting topics and areas worth making a series about. Crusades, Ottomans, Hussite war, Colonisations, Rome, Napoleon... It's frustrating..

There is Hyouge Mono which is all about historical samurai tea ceremonies. I don't know how historically accurate but I remember it was really weird.

But you will struggle finding historical anime... because Anime is from the perspective of Japan, and Japan was isolationist for a long time. They don't have a whole lot of interest outside of their region.

Golden Kamuy is Russo-Japanese, but no idea if its any good.

Junketsu no Maria ironically has anime magic witch and is fantasy, but it has a very historical European anime and combat for the average soldier to juxtapose the magic girl elements.

Yeah I get it. Japan loves japanese culture. But then again there are so many animes with a heavy western influence. Just look at "attack on titan". That thing trys to represent germany. Fuck Eren Jäger the main protagonists name could be a normal german Name. As well as so many other names and even the fucking intro starts with german lines. "Seid ihr das Essen, nein wir sind die Jäger" (Are you the food, no we are the hunters)

And in general I see a lot of animes trying to use medieval middle-european culture in their fantasy. (Not jet meet one anime using medieval india, or mongols, or slavic, or any african culture)

What I want to say is: I get it, Japanese love Japan. But they take so much from other cultures allready, why not make a serious anime about one of those storys. For example I live near the town "Geldern". In which, by legend says, the Hero Siegfried, defeated a dragon and bathed in his blood, while an oakleave accidently covered a spot on his back and this became his only weakpoint. That would be a great Anime, I think XD

Yeah, but Japan likes aesthetics and vibes. Even the most historical ones rarely digs deeper into the source material. I'm sure there are some niche anime that loves the history and source material. The only one that I know of that had historical blurbs was... Hetalia.

You need to know something about Japan: They LOVE German World War stuff. Not the horrible aspects of it but the culture, setting, dressing that it brought with it. Might be something about Outstanding World Building or whatever... I mean many anime are based around world ending catastrophes in the form of WAR. Godzilla always involves the army and cities get destroyed. I never really understood why that was so fascinating for them, but hey, that's a part of Japanese entertainment for you. Back to Germany: They have a fascination with Germany and World War. Attack on Titan has those elements, as you have mentioned. In the isekai anime "Overlord" (Even the title references D-day as a second meaning) The OP MC Bone Daddy has His own creation named Pandora's Actor is dressed as a Neo Nazi and does salutes and talks in (broken) German. I could go on but the core of the case is: Japan LOVES German World War stuff. Strange, but the influence is undeniable.

Anyway, not really a War Anime but 100% post-war and a legendary title amongst anime: MONSTER. It takes place in 1980s and 1990s Germany and the former Czechoslovakia. Many German names, no surprises there. It's a thriller anime, where the protagonist (a Doctor and Brain surgeon, who saves lives) life gets entangled with a serial killer's life. After some horrible stuff and murder happens, the Doctor decides to chase the serial killer to capture or maybe to kill him. However the serial killer is not just a normal psycho: He is a result of Nazi eugenics experiment to create a new flawless Füehrer, who can lead humanity. Shit went wrong with the Kindergarten this experiment was held and some of the kids escaped, and yup during the story the doctor encounters some of them, all showing the signs of almost inhuman feats as a result of the experiments (split personalities like Jekyl and Hyde without the transformation for one example.). Even the side characters are interesting, as the doctor is followed by the good nature sister of the serial killer, an investigator strange and sort of genius like "L" from Death Note, etc... The anime has 50+ish episodes and can be binge watched in a few days. While it's not the most action packed, it's more like the slice of life part of Game of Thrones, but with the dread of the serial killer and Nazi eugenic experiments on kids and their results. Too many words again. Summa Summarum: whoever watched "Monster" may have found it entertaining on a varied level, however everybody agrees on it, that it's an anime masterpiece, easily standing int the shadows of other great titles like Death Note. It's well written, the places it visits are era accurate (post war) and the slice of life somewhat feels familiar, as it is our own everyday life...until the serial killer fucks it up for everyone. No magic, no transformations, and everything strange and otherworldly is well within the real of possibility, just a little bit far-fetched (like monks levitating or hypnosis/mind control - not in this anime), but nothing flashy just a sprinkle of mystique to dial up the creepy, eerie and thrilling sensation, when you encounter something alien, something not normal...a Monster wearing human form. I really recommend watching Monster. It's...entertaining, interesting and a well written anime. Not the best, but close to them!

Unfortunately, the only history films I'm familiar with are live action rather than anime. Zipang sounds a bit like The Final Countdown* wherein an aircraft carrier from 1980 encounters a weird electrical storm that transports it back to just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. A bit hokey, but fairly grounded in history apart from the time travel. Though if you want more serious World War II films, you might do better with Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970) or Midway (1976).

If you haven't seen it, Spartacus (1960) is an excellent film. Based on history and while the ending is a downer, it's Stanley Kubrick and Kirk Douglas, so you can't go wrong. (It's what Gladiator wishes it could grow up to be.)

I'll leave off, since you asked for anime and those are not, but they might help scratch the itch for some more down-to-earth historical films.

actualy "the final countdown" is the inspiration for the Zinpang anime. Thou in the movie the carries leaves without much of an effect. In the anime they don't return, because they don't know if that is even possible and while they start on the premise of "not changing the history" they slowly slip deeper and deeper into the war and have no option than to alter history. Mostly in sinking one of the american carriers in self defense, after the japanese government tricked the rebellious timetravelers.
it is interesting and sad, the anime stops half way through.

And sure there are a lot of good movies, but I would love to have something deeper than a simple 2 hours movie.

I mean you seem to be a bit more oldschool. So I am sure you know Kellys heros, right? One of my favourite historical movies, not being historical at all XD

Well-versed in the classics, you might say. I was a history major as you might recall, and I ended up watching a surprising number of films during the course of my degree. I do like some more modern films, though. 1917 (2019) was a good one. Two young British soldiers have to travel across No Man's Land to warn of an impending ambush. I realize films that cast Germany as the "bad guys" might not appeal, but as this is WW1 they mostly don't fare worse than "people fighting on the other side". Nobody's exactly pretty in that one.

Anyway.

It's a shame about Zinpang not getting finished. I was always a little disappointed that The Final Countdown didn't take things further and actually explore the implications of time travel and messing with history, and something that explores that more fully would be fun! I know what you mean about wanting something more immersive than a single movie, too, though. I'd love something like that based in ancient or medieval Europe.

Grave of the Fireflies and Barefoot Gen both comes to mind as being based on WW2.
Both are worth a watch I'd say but be prepared for em to be quite depressing.

Its not real history but it does have a early-mid 20th century Europe aesthetic, Violet Evergarden.  The main character does have robotic arm prosthesis but its more of an allegory.  and they don't transform into a chain gun or anything

I'm afraid, historical anime without over the top made up fantasy stuff that makes absolutely no sense is like French quisine without wine, Octoberfest wthout beer or Cappucino without milk froth

there might be such a thing, but you'd have to question whether it even qualifies ;)

Time for germany to rise as an animation superpower and create studios for european animations. Knights, Crusades, Wars, but also something like the three musketeers, or other sort of realistic themes.
If I would have a few Millions. If I would win the lottery. (a very german sentence ;) )

"In This Corner of the World" (Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni)

Set in Japan during WW2, tells the story of a young woman struggling with wartime rationing, and the loss of Friends and Family to service, and the struggle to survive.

Bring Tissues.

First I was like, "oh, I can help with that" and then I was like "oh, he wants animated shows"... because I actually know a decent number of mangas that have historical backgrounds. Animes not so much as I don't watch a lot of anything in general.
People had already mentioned Kingdom and Vinland Saga, which are the only two mangas I know were animated, due to being popular titles.

Shame the smaller historical mangas, likely won't be animated, even if there's a few interesting titles taking place in time periods and places you've mentioned. There's mangas taking place in Roman times (Ad Astra, a title about Punic Wars, mostly about Scipio and Hannibal, or Plinius, about the famous roman scholar), ancient Egypt (fiction about Hatshepsut, don't know if that's the proper name) there's also one about Napoleon and even the Hussite wars (and Jan Zizka, it's narrated by a young, survivor girl that joined his mercenary ranks. Don't remember it's title though as it's a completed series.), hell, there's even a manga about Poland past 1918, the early days of independence.
