Zootopia - A Haunting

by
The Haunting Investigation

Judy and Finnick sat in the hospital room, the sterile air heavy with the gazelle nurse’s revelation: no fire, no recent blaze, just an old burned-out orphanage from nearly 100 years ago, their collapse in its foggy ruins chalked up to exhaustion or hallucination. But to them, the memories were vivid—Mira’s lavender baths, the cubs’ endless tag, six “Christmases” of twinkling trees, Judy’s heat-fueled fixation on Finnick, and the final, choking inferno that Mira’s ghostly push had saved them from. They swore it was real, the tactile weight of Mira’s hugs, the burn of smoke in their throats, undeniable.
Discharged with clean bills of health, they refused to let it go. Judy’s violet eyes burned with determination, Finnick’s street smarts itching for answers. It happened—Mira, the cubs, the fire. Wish we could prove it, escape this fog, Judy thought, her heat’s ache a lingering echo. Finnick’s mind churned: Ghosts or not, we lived it—wish for truth, no more lies. They dove into investigation, hitting Zootopia’s archives, their ZPD badges granting access to dusty records.
At the city library, they unearthed an old newspaper story, yellowed and brittle, dated December 26, 1925: “Mira’s Orphanage Tragedy—Christmas Fire Claims All But One.” The article detailed the blaze that consumed the orphanage, killing Mira, a saintly wolf caregiver, and her foster cubs—fox kits, bunny young, all named in heartbreaking detail—except one survivor, a fox kit who fled into the night. Photos showed Mira’s smiling face, the cubs’ toys charred in rubble, the orphanage’s ruins matching the foggy site where they’d collapsed.
Judy’s heart clenched: Mira saved us from her own death’s echo—ghosts reliving that day. Wish we could’ve saved them. Finnick’s jaw tightened: Lived ten years in their loop—real as hell. Wish for closure, but this? Proof. The story confirmed their haunting, the glitch a spectral trap, their investigation a vow to honor Mira’s memory, the hospital’s reality a bridge to their truth.
