Temporary Hiatus

Had to put my dog down yesterday that I've had for 14 years. I'm absolutely devastated and can't stop bawling my eyes out, but she was unable to walk on her own since last sat. Vet xrays showed she had severe end stage hip dysplasia, severe arthritis in her spine causing many of her vertebrae to fuse together and loss of feeling in her back feet/legs. It was heartbreaking to see her like that and was easily the most difficult decision I made in my life. I probably won't be genning anything for a while because of it, I knew it was coming and that it was gonna hit me hard, but was not expecting it to be this hard. I'll get back into it eventually but I've unfortunately lost all interest in most things right now while I grieve for her. I think the best course for me is to eventually do a memorial gen for her to help me get back into things again. To anyone with a pet they love, please give them a big hug and kiss for me and let them know how much you love them ❤️

Losing one’s pet is next to losing a member of one’s family.

Thank you. It really does feel like that. I knew it was gonna hurt and be painful to deal with, but damn, I wasn't expecting it to be this bad.

I feel for you I have had to do the same many times myself, it never gets easier just remember to hold onto the good times you had with her.

I have been lucky  that over the years I have found another to replace them but also unlucky  that in each case I upgraded from one form of crazy to another  Collie Shepherd Husky I now have the Ultimate level of insanity in my life Malinois 3 Belgian Shepherds

Eventually I'll be getting another dog to take her place. She was a crazy one too, but I loved that about her. She's a white german shepherd so with your dogs you definitely know how crazy, vocal and expressive they can be. The house feels so quiet and empty now and will take some time to get used to.

Let's hope in the other world ahe will receive a new, similarly happy life as you gave her. I wish you coming back to normal state of existence, and when you think about her, you will only let out a tear of happiness that you had such a special company in life. Take care man♥️

Thank you. I hope she does find happiness where she is now, but I know for sure she's patiently waiting for me to be with her again. I did my best to give her the best life I could. I think I did pretty well considering she lived this long.

There is no doubt that you did more than best to make her life be good, warm, and long. 14 years is tonnes of time, which is hard to make dog live that long. For sure she is now waiting for you at the gates of better world, but she is looking down, just to watch you, being this good angel which cheering for you, and hopping that your life will continue on the right path, even without her...

I’m so sorry that happened. I know what it’s like to lose a pet you grew up with. Take the time to grieve and keep yourself near your loved ones.

Thank you. Its hard, she was my first pet and the first one I lost. All things considered, I'd say that's pretty good. Thankfully I've got some incredible neighbors that have been comforting me and checking in on me each day since I'm a long way from family

Sorry for your loss. On the bright side, 14 is a lot in dog years, so at least she lived a long life.

Thank you and yes, 14 is a VERY long time, especially for a german shepherd. I'm so glad she was able to live such a long life, but at the same time, being with her for that long just makes it hurt that much more. Damn dog took a big part of me with her :(

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I've experienced similar, and it's never easy. But sounds like you had many great years with her, and I'm sure she had a great life with you. My thoughts and well wishes are with you.

Thank you! And yes, she had one hell of a life! She's done several cross country trips with me over the years, went to many national parks, climbed mountains, explored glaciers and even bit a moose like the crazy dog she was! That's a memory I will never forget!

Many of my wolves suffered from the same thing.  I had to send them over the rainbow bridge.  I too cried my eyes out.  My heart goes out to you.  I can only leave you with the words someone left me.....'Our pets leave us so soon so they can tell the next pet how wonderful and loving a friend and family member we were.'

May you find peace.

Thanks ❤️ I'm sure it still hurts years later but at least we can get some relief looking back on our time with them knowing we gave them their best life

Thank you ❤️ I'm dreading losing another one. I have 2 other dogs, a 12 year old golden and her 7 year old mixed son, who looks EXACTLY like a black lab even though he's 50% golden retriever. They both seem just as sad as I am and that kills me just as much, but we can all grieve together and give each other comfort as we heal

Thank you ❤️ hopefully it won't be too long. Each day is getting a little bit easier to deal with, but it sucks when it just hits me out of nowhere and I just break down and cry. I'm gonna miss her so damn much but I do find relief knowing that she's at peace and no longer suffering

Damn. I don't even know what to say. I'm so sorry you had to go through this.

Putting our furry friends down is never an easy decision nor one we want to make, but in the end, we love them and that's why we force ourselves to gather the necessary courage to make such decision.

This dark time will pass. And once it does, you'll find out you emerged stronger. I know it sounds cringe, but this is actually what happens.

I hope I didn't say anything stupid that made you feel worse, but if I did, please forgive me.

Thank you and no, I feel the same way. I'm slowly healing but since she was my first pet I ever lost I wasn't sure what to expect. She meant the world to me and it hurts so bad, but at the same time, her passing has made me stronger and has given me some relief knowing that when I lose the next one I'll be able to handle it better. That dog has shaped my life for the better, both in life and death and I will forever be grateful to her for that ❤️

You've lost a son, a brother, a piece of your heart.
Nothing can heal you or make you feel better.
Nothing.
So why all this?
Think of your loved one still with you. How would they feel seeing you hurt?
The only thing you have to do is be well and give love to the world, to honor their will and their memory.

My heartfelt condolences.

I grew up with a snow white german shepherd dog who was a yearling when I was born, and purebreeds of that sort are notorious for developing hip problems as they age. Sure enough, it was hip dysplasia at eleven years of age. ...It's never easy, giving up a fixture of your life and family, and I grieve strongly for you. But you'll get through this as time passes ans the rawness eases into a dull, wistful remembrance.

Best of luck getting through this, and be good to yourself while remembering the times you had together.
