They wouldn't have understood if we told them what we were doing, or why we were doing it. They'd bluster, or whine, or - worse - they'd find a way to escape and forge ahead, confident in their own delusions of grandeur. It's a little sad, but also quaint, how their perceived self-supremacy seemed to dominate all thought simply because they were the apex predator of their own little corner of the universe, while knowing nothing about the world beyond their doorstep.

It was a mindset that would probably lead to them destroying themselves, one way or another. But, nothing a billion billion civilizations hasn't done before them, if we're being truthful about it.

The real truth was, despite needing to be protected from the horrors that lie in the dark listening for the subtle rustling and murmurs of life through the cosmic background radiation, they were simultaneously too dangerous to be allowed out of their quarantine.

We had to silence them. If we didn't do it, someone else would, and it would've gone much more poorly for them than some wistful cosmic loneliness. The filters were unobtrusive. Completely invisible, in fact. The radio emissions from their world were silenced at the perimeter, and any incoming communications were similarly muted on their way in.

We had to let them gaze at the sky in wonder, still - else they may lose their sense of wonder, and with it, lose their urge to grow better - but they still need time to figure themselves out before we let them listen, to hear the symphony of civilizations communicating across the blackness. Before they gained access to the world beyond their doorstep. Before they had access to the sorts of technology that would make it possible for them to spread to other worlds.

We needed to let them grow, to evolve and develop to a point that they're no longer a danger to themselves, or the rest of the galaxy. They needed to sort their own shit out, before we let our own shit in. The horrors that lie in the dark are always listening and waiting, and there is no way that their world is prepared for that. It would be over in an instant; snuffed out like a match in the night.

The horrors are the reason we shelter tiny, vulnerable worlds like this now; why we prevent them from reaching out until they're ready. We let one slip through our grasp, millions of years years ago, long before they were ready. They advanced so fast and escaped their solar system before we could quarantine it.

And our failure resonates to this day. Our purpose is to protect worlds from the horrors that were seeded across the galaxy all those eons ago.

The escape of the Earthlings was our greatest failure, and we will pay for it for eternity.

Ahahhaha! I love some good mysterious, incomprehensible horror tbh. I'd probably write it if I didn't know it'd do abysmally here. XD

Oh boy just you wait hahaha, someday I will be bored enough to work on the less-porny, more-scifi novel set in this distant-future worldbuilding project <3

Cameron, a lynx of approximately 24 years of age, was dancing with two unknown girls in the middle of the courtyard of the house where they had been invited to celebrate. It was almost 1 a.m. when someone tapped him on the shoulder from behind, catching his attention.

“Yes?” asked the feline, turning to find his friend Derek, a tall, burly Rottweiler who looked like he had just finished serving a long prison sentence.

The canine brought his snout close to his friend’s ear and whispered, “Come with me quietly, I have to show you something.”
Cameron nodded and, without saying goodbye to the girls, followed the dog, who was already walking away toward the interior of the house. Passing the drinking contest in the kitchen and a poker game in the living room, the two males went upstairs and entered one of the bedrooms, which, strangely, had its door ajar.

“What the hell are we doing here?” said the lynx, somewhat uncomfortable upon realizing that they were in the bedroom of the absent homeowner.

“Look at this,” said Derek, pointing to the glass door of a luxury cabinet that had been left open, with a padlock hanging from it.

Behind the glass, a striking bottle of whiskey could be seen, filled with amber liquid that seemed to emanate splendor when the artificial light hit its surface.

“It's a Macallan...” stammered the lynx, seeing the drink just a couple of feet away from him.

"Yes! A fucking Macallan Reflexion! And it's right there, unlocked!" exclaimed Derek, excited by the treasure in front of them.

“What? No, no, no... You're crazy!” Cameron quickly rejected what his friend was suggesting.

“Cam... Listen: if we don't do it, someone else will... It's only a matter of time!” argued the Rottweiler.

Cameron grabbed his ears, closed his eyes, and clenched his teeth, trying to control himself and think... but he didn't think and simply replied, “Damn it, okay!”

Derek rubbed his hands together before carefully grabbing the bottle and uncorking it while the lynx brought over two glass cups that were on a small table next to the display case.

When the extremely expensive whiskey had filled both glasses, the two friends held their drinks and toasted, “Cheers!”

Before the first sip, a light aroma seduced the lynx's snout: ashes, honey, blueberries, vanilla, strawberries, sublime freshness. When the liquid conquered his palate, his mouth immediately watered with the delicate citrus flavor, hints of cinnamon and chocolate. The experience was a journey the young male would never have dreamed of.

“What the fuck are you doing!” someone shouted from the doorway of the room.

Quickly, Cameron awoke from his reverie to see the enraged face of the party's host: his friend Travis, a beautiful white-scaled dragon, taller than Derek and with a body just as imposing.

Someone is about to get fucked to the tune of some expensive-ass whiskey.

Really good booze like that is absolutely transcendent though, I do agree. <3 This was a fun read, must've been an awesome party too.

It was far too hot for an Autumn night. The humid and thick air clung to their bodies as they worked in the hole, each shovel full of dirty being tossed back out in the forest. Out in the campsite. Years of memories built in the clearing they loved so much tainted by the smell of musk, vomit, and wet soil.

Dylan was the first one to climb out of it, tossing his shovel before hoisting himself up; breathless, sweaty, panting, he made his way under the blinding light of Max's truck and looked down the shaded hole he and Corey had been digging for the last hour. It was deep. It had to be.
The sound of more dirt shoveled filled the air angrily, Corey cursing under his breath being drowned by the low tune of country and soft rock playing out the radio speakers. His muscles ached, his jaw was tight, and his eyes were still watery from before—yet he kept digging. Digging like he wanted to fall out of that world and then bury himself under all the tree roots.

Dylan flinched when a rough hand laid on his shoulder, and he looked to his right to see Max holding out a half empty gallon of water. "I can't stay near him," he spat shakily, his lips trembling with nausea. His were eyes swollen and his breath still carried the faintest smell of bile as he snatched the shovel off peer's hand and replaced it with the container, stumbling his way to the depth before joining Corey in the hole. More Dirt. Sweet, caring Max was always covered in dirt. Might as he try, he could never get rid of it.

His eyes tracked to the bed of the truck and his stomach contorted painfully, bile raising in his throat. He placed the gallon on the hood—he didn't think he could drink from it and keep it down. He limped out of the lights only to see a burning flame in the darkness. Tiny, frail, could be easily snuffed out. However, it grew for an instant, and a puff of sour smoke blew in the stagnant air.
Sasha's lenses reflected the orange burn before he flipped the lighter shut. His eyes gleamed in the night like two circles of glacial ice. He puffed from the cigarette again, his trembling hand making the ash fall to the ground as soon as it left his lips. Sasha, ever coolheaded Sasha, trembling like a leaf. Dylan twisted his nose at the smell, but at least it hid the stench.

He joined his friend, leaning on the side of the pick-up truck and staring at the vast darkness of the forest. "Blyat," Sasha said softly, and puffed again. There was little to be said, and yet, they all thought the same anyway. The clouds covered the sky like a big blanket that didn't let either the moon or the stars have their way. And they preferred them to stay like that.

"Fuck! Fuck! Fuck!" They craned their hands quickly to the voice coming out of the hole. Corey climbed out of the depth swinging his shovel around and then beating it to the ground like a manic. "I'm fucking done with this!" he cried out, and then sobbed, throwing the tool aside irreverently and stomping his way to the truck. The other two were silent as he downed almost all of the water. Max's exit was solemn, and he carried his shovel all the way to them as they huddled around the bed. It was time.

Wrapped in an old checkered blanket was what they had cove to bury. Like unassigned pal-bearers, they stumbled their way to the hole—it was ungraceful, clumsy, but it was also futile to be gentle. With an overlapping groan they let go of the blanket and it hit the depth with a sickening, wet thud. Some grimaced at it, others just averted their eyes.

For the first time, it was like the woods were finally silent—like all sound had gone into the whole, and was ready to be buried with him. They stood around the opening, staring at the blanket like it would move at any moment. But no, it didn't move. He was dead. And the hole was just a gaping maw ready to swallow him with all the dirt and roots and every sound of the forest.

Dylan picked up the shovel and threw some dirt in. The rest followed suit.

Shit, what a scene. Can't help but leave you wondering about the wild events that've lead up to this point. Rarely an innocent reason to be burying anything out in the woods, much less that.

(I’m sick this week so something short and not edited much and maybe a bit too much expanse still in my head)

Some have it because it’s in their blood.  The foundation of the land was revolution and bloodshed.  Inevitably that continues.

Some have it in their nature.  The fowl monsters out there steeped in greed.  Violence is a threat, a power to achieve what is wanted but deemed a necessity.

Not us. The rest are corrupted.  Peace is a luxury we strive for in a world where they exist. So we have weapons too. Weapons we make sure are up to date and the best, just in case they have to be used.

Sometimes I wonder, take all the guns away, reset the game.  It might make a happier world.  But it doesn’t matter. It comes down to fear.

We all think it and we all fall for it. We know how they think and if we don’t do it, someone else would. It might as well be us. And so everyone is ready to fight everyone again.

I certainly hope you don't feel pressure to contribute to this, really. XD Sorry you're sick, hope you feel better soon.

This was a nice read, editing or lack thereof be damned. <3 Expanse is pretty solid for sure.
