Changing Art Software

The time has come to change the way I go about making digital art and animation.  This particularly relates to Adobe Animate and Photoshop, which has been my mainstay since the beginning (during the Macromedia days!). I've used these tools to create the art, animation and dressups during their heyday but since their software has become more bug ridden, and costlier on a monthly basis I've grown reluctant to sticking with them. The nail in the coffin for me has been Adobe's policies to their recent censorship practices on uploads to their cloud service to what they consider as 'objectionable' which I can imagine may even go after my uploaded content here. The fact they've been banning artists from their service over what they consider is acceptable does not sit well with me since I'm a paying and loyal customer, just like everyone else that's used their services. I cannot in good faith support Adobe anymore with these practices, on top of the other garbage they've thrown at us over the years.

Therefore, I've been looking at alternatives such as Gimp for digital art and OpenToonz for animation. Preferably free and non subscription based. These might not be the final tools I use but I plan to migrate out of Adobe over the next few weeks or so. It's about time I make this change for the better of my wallet and becoming a better artist. It's nice to use tools that don't get in the way of creativity~

It's always moral to pirate Adobe products

There might be a dubious reason why someone would give away a popular expensive product for free ||=(:3

imo, I don't think gimp is that good for making new art.  I feel like it's good for making small edits (what people call photoshopping) of work that already exists.

I'm not much of an artist myself, but I switched to krita after using gimp, for its better workflow.

Their dictator policies got ridiculous yeah. I used Photoshop for years too and almost never wanted to change it.
Clip Studio Paint is very similar to Photoshop for drawing art and has been my main on PC for a while now.

Just remember that if you paid for a "yearly plan" you signed to pay the m for 12 months, preferable end your plan the last month before renewal or the gonna bite your wallet hard.

I would go for Krita instead of Gimp. That one is more art-friendly in terms of the tools available and it is also open-source (no need to pay anything unless you like to donate but that is optional)

It's good that you are moving away from Adobe. They've been doing scummy things against artists recently

Krita is free and open source, plus supports animation too. I use it for basically all my art. It's much better than GIMP for drawing, and doesn't have a questionable license like OpenToonz.

That's a nice idea. I change different softwares too. Since I gave up using Microsoft Paint and focus on Medibang Paint and Colors Live.

At this point not even pirating Adobe is worth it anymore. My recommendations could be FireAlpaca/Medibang or Krita, or if you want a paid alternative, I would recommend FireAlpaca SE, Paintstorm, and the mandatory classic, SAI (I mean, there's a lot of cracked versions, but the developer does deserve the support and the purchase is worth it). And yes, maybe even Clip Studio.

For animation, I am trying Moho, though I got that in a recent Humble Bundle, unfortunately the software is expensive by itself. OpenToonz I've heard is a good alternative.
