Briarheart is an experimental setting most similar to Zootopia or Beastars. It is an anthology of stories which explore themes related to my feelings on life which I developed over the past decade during my 20’s. It’s also smut lol.
Briarheart is set in a modern world populated by a mixture of mostly anthro, and the occasional feral creature. Within the setting most species keep to their own, but cities and universities tend to be boiling pots. Rather than look at more complicated ideas like racism/speciesism and the types of supremacy sentiments which would arise in a world like this, a task which I am not at all equipped to do, I have chosen to abstract away from that and write in something of a bubble. The stories will focus on moving into adulthood, navigating the stress of life, school, and relationships, exploring different ideas and attitudes surrounding sex in a setting where infections and pregnancies are easily avoided, and whatever else I end up writing.
At its core, Briarheart is something of a writing experiment for me. I want to practice finding my balance between outlining and discovery writing while also working to develop distinct voices for characters. I’ve found that trying to contextualize my own smutty ideas and fantasies has given me opportunities to do just that while also putting to page a lot of feelings which I may not have fully conceptualized up until now. I don’t have a plan for Briarheart and I wouldn’t consider there to be a story or narrative which connects everything. I’m not sure how many stories I will write, so I make no promises, but I do have a few ideas which have been turning over in my head.
