Hello everyone. I'm not normally one to poke my nose into political stuff but the current issue that seeks to destroy my favorite hobby is at our door and I feel now is the time to speak
I know it's hard to want to keep going with all of the nonsense happening in the world, be it the abhorrent political scene or creative platform censorship but you have to. If you don't, who will?
The powers (if they can even be called that) that seek to cease censor and destroy aren't some insurmountable force, they are a small coalition of loud irrelevant voices seeking to spread misery onto others and if you cave to the demands of people/groups like this they will not simply be sated with your loss and stop. Once they realize their words hold power over people they will keep speaking and pushing for more change for the worse.
It is our duty, not just for our own interests, but for the sake of the free world and democracy, to stop these people.
How, you may ask?
Do not stop doing what you enjoy at the behest of others.
Do not stop drawing. Do not stop consuming. Do not submit to the tyranny of loud Karens on the internet.
Sign petitions, call these companies and tell them what I told you. Call your local government offices. Stop using products that support tyrannical movements.
"But Foks I'm just one lonely gooner and nothing I say is going to matter"
If you need convincing or proof that this is false, look to your current foe. Who are they? Some random religious nutjob or bored Karen with a voice that signed a petition, called a company or their local government office, and filled their ears with bullshit until some exec. decided this was the will of the masses.
If you take nothing else from this ramble, read the following;
You have a voice. It matters a lot more than you think it does.
If you want your hobbies, your safe spaces, your life to go unhindered by these cretins, you need to use it.
We spend our lives under scrutiny; video games are going to make us violent, the internet is going to make us hateful, our sexuality and gender is going to ruin the world. I look at the people who make these claims, their violence, demands, actively unravelling society... then I look to myself, a peaceful person who harbors no ill will toward another living thing who just wants to be happy and mind their own business.
I know who the problem is in this situation. I'm not willing to change my life at their behest. You shouldn't be either.
Defend yourself, protect what's yours, fight back, don't be a pussy.
You got this. If you need a shoulder to rest on I'm here for you.
It's getting a bit harder in the UK because the government themselves seek to do that in order to "protect children", and there is a petition, currently with over 450,000 signatures, to repeal the new Online Safety Act, and the government have made it clear that they have no plans to repeal it, and one politician (whom I admittedly dislike) who voiced opposition to it was then told by the technology secretary that he therefore sides with child predators like Jimmy Savile. The answer there though is to invest in VPNs, and preferably one whose company isn't hosted in a British Overseas Territory etc.

Indeed, but the problem is that these people have been around for centuries. They've decided, regardless of what their own holy texts say to the contrary, that they're responsible for ensuring their particular God's Kingdom on Earth. The fact that their particular ***omnipotent*** God can't do it themselves doesn't matter. It's always been about control. Religion, once upon a time, in the VERY early days of humanity had a purpose, and that was to help people reckon with each other, themselves, and the larger world around them. Now, though? It has been so warped and corrupted since that time that it would be entirely unrecognizable by those that held the original beliefs. But because the ones with the loudest voices are the ones most traumatized and warped and damaged and corrupted by their indoctrination, they can no longer understand anything but that screeching, gibbering evil. And while this in NO WAY excuses them, and in NO WAY means I will treat them any better than the pond scum they aspire to be, it is at least understandable why they've gone to this extreme.

One of the big issues i have with religious folk is that an overwhelming number of them seem to think its their job to pass judgment on everyone, in other words, playing god.

It's what they do with the corruption and warping of what religion used to be. Suddenly, instead of understanding themselves and the world with better info, they're in the position of decreeing that their particular ghod is the only 'real' one, and thus their words must be followed by everyone, even the unaffiliated or different believers. Otherwise, how can that particular version of ghod be really 'respected' as the one true source of <whatever.> They take on the role of their ghod because their ghod is impossible, and thus isn't showing miracles like he's supposed to. But rather than confront the absurdity of their beliefs internally, realize it's all impossible, and just leave behind the idiocy, they MUST enforce the doctrines so they don't have to contend with them having wasted much of their lives on it.

With the UK it isn't religiously-driven, but just "protecting children", since they mention that 25% of youth suicides are due to things they've seen on social media, which is a horrifyingly high number, but I feel the act is going about it all wrong, using the chilling impact of an £18 million fine for not doing enough to ensure children don't see harmful content, so things like individuals running small browser-based games or information forums on innocuous things like car parts are choosing to shut down because they can't afford to adhere to the law or pay the price if a troll decides to flood their forum.
With the UK government, the main thing seems to be about control and regulation. For decades it's all been about that. If there's something they can't control or they feel it's dangerous, instead of leaving it be or waiting to see what happens, they clamp down and regulate it. It's usually in the name of protecting children or anti-terrorism.

I would absolutely like to understand where that figure came from. And I'd, even without seeing it, be more than willing to say that neither a majority, nor even a strong minority, of those cases were because of violent or sexual content. They see shit from their peers, comparing them to something or other, or as Unfriended showed, calling for them to do self-harm. Bullying is FAR more prevalent to a teen, yet somehow a perfectly normal physical function (sex) is vilified, but the bullying and the threats of violence aren't being addressed. Imagine that. (Potentially) making up a random factoid, then building a whole case around "protecting children" when the real protection isn't from their own bodies, it's from those peers and adults that are causing them mental and/or emotional harm.
Anyone claiming to be 'for the children!!!!' that isn't an admitted pedophile does not give a fuck about the kids. They're all about the control. Period.

I admit I have no clue where the figure comes from. but is what the government along with groups like the NSPCC are claiming. And I agree that it is mostly due to bullying through social media, rather than the content itself (e.g. humiliating videos), that causes so many problems.

Egregious as some of that is, I am concerned about conflating this too much with the recent payment processor overreach. One is a democratically acceptable, if distasteful and almost certainly incorrect, action. VISA et al meanwhile have effectively engaged in extrajudicial punishments and circumvention of the democratic process.
I think people need to be careful not to forget that; this isn't just censorship. It's a non-governmental, non-legal entity taking the law into its own hands and being told by many that it's fine, and yes please go ahead and take more of our democracy for yourselves.

All very well said, and I thank you for saying it. We need more voices pushing back against not just tyranny, but doubt and apathy, too, and you've covered both nicely!

"But Foks I'm just one lonely gooner and nothing I say is going to matter"
And this is the reason everything usually falls flat on its face. People say they're only one person, and multiple people say it, multiple people don't act because they think they alone cannot help.

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all.
I think people need it read to them. Repeatedly. And then to be reminded that a scoundrel is just a normal person of whom the majority don't approve. Perhaps rightly so, but much more often wrongly.
There is a quote by H. L. Mencken ~~~ Quote: The trouble with fighting for human freedom is tha
It sucks that we allow ourselves to be controlled like this. Our freedoms as people being taken away because a lot of people think that we are fighting in vain because they think they are only one person out of the several hundreds of thousands, that they alone cannot fight for our rights when there are plenty of people who try to. We let this fester and get worse rather than nipping it in the bud and ultimately it comes back around to nip us first.

It's never about "the cause." It's always about the money and the influence. This is why I despise activists.
It's never about the kids, the animals, the veterans, the clean water, the disaster victims, the workers, or the cure to whatever new plague is vexing us - it's all about profit.
I don't care what side of the aisle they're on; each one is an ideologue who is driven only by their agenda, moving on to the next "new thing" as soon as they get what they want. Never satisfied and always looking to pad their wallets. Even charities aren't safe, since the allure of "free stuff" brings out the worst in people.
When people start to gripe about related issues, I've gotten in a habit of asking them to "tell me about that 'Collective Shout' game that people are talking about - is it like like that GTA 3 or Mortal Combat?" The feigned ignorance immediately creates a "protect the innocent" response, even as they get outraged about the group and the censorship. It's shit-tier emotional manipulation, but it gets folks riled-up enough to sign petitions.
Don't fuck with the internet; it's full of trolls who are a lot better at trolling than the trolliest trolls you know, and the internet remains undefeated for exactly that reason.

For those in the U.S, we have a proposal in Congress called the Fair Access to Banking Act. If passed into law, it would prohibit banks and payment processors from denying service and transactions that are otherwise legal. They would have to show a risk based assessment for any denials (i.e. credit rating and pay payment history), but specifically can not deny based on a reputational risk of the bank or processor. It also would not allow a complete denial of services that are otherwise available to their regular customer base, so they wouldn't have a loophole of dropping a client like Steam all together.
If you are in the States, start contacting your reps to get this passed along to the President and hopefully signed into law.
