Censorship

You see it everywhere now.
Paypal stripping creators of their accounts.
Etsy no longer listing sex toys.
Steam and itch.io having to get rid of nsfw games.
E621 and furaffinity banning loli/cub/shota
Remember Tumblr?

It wont stop there. The Payment Processors and Censorship groups smell blood in the water. Itll only get worse from here.

You can't be sure that a different payment processor, or one this industry makes for itsself, will be strong enough to withstand that same pressure.

As far as i can see, your best solution is Crypto. To get to the nsfw transactions you use crypto for, the payment processors would have to go after crypto itsself, and they like crypto.

"Not everyone wants to learn how to use crypto"
- They will if you make it more inconvenient not to. If everyone in this industry or even this website restricted themselves to crypto, your customers' only choice would be to figure it out. Im sure itd hurt for a while at first. But what is your fanbase/community/customer-base more loyal to and find more important? You and your work, or convenience?

"crypto is a scam"
- is that why 1 whole bitcoin has been over 50 grand in value for 5 years and is now double that? When does the rug pull? This is a long scam. Not only that but paypal, cashapp, robinhood, alot of places on the internet that wouldnt support it if it was too risky support it today. But there are also coins like USDC that are pinned at the value of the US Dollar and backed with real cash. And dont forget that even fractions of a coin hold value.

They cant censor you if its crypto. And if your worried about the price fluctuating, dont hold your assets as crypto for very long. Exchange it for fiat money the moment you get it. If you want better anonymity from your customers, go through the extra effort to host your own wallet.

You cant use the payment processors, so you have to become your own. And that requires some legwork on your part, and essentially a one time walk up a couple flight of stairs on your customers part.Though it would be better if we have an on-ramp off-ramp platform. One where customers are charged in fiat and you receive it as crypto automatically, rather than having to do it all yourself. They exist, but I have yet to search thoroughly enough (busy).

The strongest solution to the extrajudicial prosecution of LEGAL entertainment, is decentralization.

EDIT: Ill be honest tho, i see Japan is not happy. If National Governments start hitting these payment processors with unfair trade/antitrust penalties, maybe even threaten to break up their duopoly, then maybe there's hope yet. Cus if visa and mastercard bent the knee to these facebook normie losers from australia that (pfft) have their tweets protected, then theyd definitely bend the knee to Governments whooping the crap out of their bottom line.

Hm, just looked up and saw that the "gas fees" have become more bearable. I remember the ones of >20USD from the second-last hype (when I invested too) and was about to say those are a major blocker.
Currently on e.g. dogecoin they are under a dollar, thus often way better than paypal. There will also be some fee to transfer from and to USD/Euro etc. however.

I agree that we should probably use crypto as a fallback and push it to be the main currency in the community. Unfortunately a big issue is WHICH crypto exactly. Since conversion fees are not insignificant and complicate the process even more. I recall the struggle wanting to buy Shiba coin before it was popular enough to be on the major exchange places. Think I ended up with about 30% of fees >_<.

5 years ago, I bet the clear choice would have been dogecoin, but with its big supporter, Musk, falling out of favor for many in our community, that is probably not going to happen.

"But what is your fanbase/community/customer-base more loyal to and find more important? You and your work, or convenience?" Nowadays there is a realistic chance that customers will drop to the convenience of AI art instead, but if the payment companies do pull through as they wish, people will hardly have a choice but to do what you suggest.

"And if your worried about the price fluctuating, don't hold your assets as crypto for very long. Exchange it for fiat money the moment you get it."
Unfortunately that does come at a conversion cost.

From my very cursory look (honestly i do much more stock trading than crypto), it does seem that the fees involved with crypto are preferable when compared to the fees/cuts the likes of paypal takes.

I find AI is less convenient that learning crypto. There's a steep enough learning curve. Most customers, especially if they can't be bothered with what is essentially "signing up with a bank", are unlikely to go through the hassle of learning how to hash out a prompt that gets them results anywhere comparable to an artists actual work.
Not only that, but i find AI Art to be stale and cookie cutter, even when done well. I cant imagine not getting bored of the samey results eventually.

Any customer that goes through that effort to go for ai art rather than using crypto, which is easier to do, is a customer any self respecting artist wouldnt want money from anyway. They are traitors, and this debacle would just expose their true colors.

True outside of "hype times" at least.

Lol, good luck putting food onto your table with your income being the knowledge that your customers are traitors xD

Was not referring to necessarily learning how to generate art themselves - that's indeed a significant learning curve - but rather, that kind of art is simply available in large quantities for free.

Ah i see what you mean lol. Well, ai art is a separate problem thats already snowballing, that will continue to do so regardless of this situation. I dont really see this issue helping the usage of ai art very much. I think that ship has already sailed and will reach whatever critical mass it intends to reach either way. 🤷‍♂️

Ai has its limits as well, such as being a "destructive" tool. You wont be getting easily composed edits of an ai art piece. I rest easy knowing that ai is wholly incapable of making any kind of decent final form content, beyond 2d art.
