Feldon

The Origins of Feldon

by
Was at the thrift shop this morning when I came across a copy of Martin The Warrior, one of the Redwall novels from the early 90s.  I double checked to make sure it was the right one and yes, my memory holds.  I bought it, because it is the origin of Juniper Feldon, who is base very loosely off of the character Felldoh in that book.

Funny thing was that when I first read Martin the Warrior all those years ago I kept misreading that squirrel's name as Felldon and about towards the end I realized that no, the character is Felldoh.

Now if you know anything about Redwall novels you know the following:  Redwall is always under siege, the main character always heads to Salamandastron on a quest and that the entire supporting cast will be dead by the end of the novel.  And so Felldoh died at the end of Martin the Warrior and was reincarnated in my own rosy little world as Feldon.

Now to be fair, Feldon is a totally different character by this point:  A gay red squirrel with a fixation on rabbits, telepathic abilities and he hunts ghosts and cryptids for a living.  Still I will admit to his origins in the pages of a Brian Jacques novel and I must give thanks to Mr. Jacques for that.

I had always wondered if you named him after Felldoh! Unless maybe I asked you a long time ago and you answered, I don't remember. Still, Felldoh was a neat character.

I'll have to reread Martin the Warrior to see how close my character is to Felldoh, I would be curious, it has been 30 years at this point.  I remember that he was a slave and rebellious but that's about all.

I think it's one of the best books of the series. Yes, Felldoh was a slave and very rebellious. He was also hell on taking revenge against Badrang the Tyrant for his enslavement. His desire for vengeance was well written as a character flaw that got between him and his friendships and his focus. I read Martin The Warrior close to 20 years ago and Felldoh still sticks out as a very interesting character.

Yep, and he was really just a tiny part of the story, but everytime he came into the story I was excited.

^^ deffo one of the reasons i fell so hard into the furry fandom.. it always makes me smile when someone else brings up the sieres as a pivotal point in there lives furry or not.

Part of the reason I did this post, if anyone wants to see where Feldon came from, you can go and get Martin the Warrior and keep an eye out for the squirrel Felldoh.

I know that I read the first nine of the books before walking away from the series.  My favorite book of the series is Outcast of Redwall.

Martin the Warrior is probably my favorite Redwall novel, though like you I got through something like seven of the books and then let it go after the pattern recognition kicked in. Also never really liked the vermin-as-a-species-trait thing (Outcast was disappointing to me), so that didn't help.

I hear that quite often in regards to Outcast.  I will say this, Outcast was at least a slight departure of the Redwall norm.  Which is probably why I liked it.

It does have that going for it, I'd agree. It's been a good while since I last read any in any case.

Fixated on rabbits?  Not even other rodent species?

Rabbits top the list, but rodents and rodent-like are all good.  Opossum are high in my esteem, so are Foxes.

Don't foxes chase after squirrels and other rodents?

God I hope so!

Now I'm curious about your thoughts on large cats and raccoons.

I prefer cats over dogs and I find raccoons charming.
