Discord Hack & Recovered

just got home to find my Discord seemed to been hacked in, and was spamming some crypto bullshit everywhere..

Apologies for the trouble, I have recovered me account back.

Sadly I think damage has been done since I have been purged out of several Channels I was following :/

Ugh That is harsh.I am very glad you have it back but sorry you had to go though it...
That channels won't let you back in? They ought to know you don't do the crypto shit.

Sadly so. I'm just really glad you got it back quick.
My roommate was hacked and he never got it back.
Had to start a new one. :(

And this is why I haven’t felt the want to make a Discord cause I hear them getting hacked all the time.

Literally every single instance is someone clicking on a dubious link, or giving away personal account info in some way.

said they were out when it happened.  Kinda hard to give out details or click links when you’re not on your Discord.

these hacks are not always instant. Case in point was a year or so ago with multiple youtube channels being hacked and spraying crypto garbage for hours to days while their owners tried to recover the channels and then on top of that try to recover all their videos that had been deleted.

In that particular case the hacker stole cookies with authentication from the target via a trojan horse. They sent a very legit looking ad read offer with a PDF contract attached. The contract itself was filled with garbage data and unable to be opened, but attempting to open it would then open a file in the background which would scrape for cookies (specifically those that are authentication ones that allow you to stay logged into a website) and transmit that cookie back to the hacker. Then it was just a matter of using the data in that cookie to spoof being that youtuber and get in.

This isn't discord itself, more the maliciousness of hackers and script kiddies using even the slightest miss click to gather the data they need, and then pouncing.

Well either way it’s just one more thing for me to keep a watch on, and despite

claims I doubt EVERY instance of Discords getting hacked were because of dubious links, emails or the sort and that’d just be another headache I need to worry about.

well I got a very rude awakening for you stuff like this is purely via user error. The fact that discord is associated with hacks is due to confirmation bias. It is one of the most used chat apps and there for the most talked about. Things like telegram or whatever else is out there are no different or any more secure as it always comes down to the EBKC problem

Yeah well, as I said I’m still not using it as I stated, it’s just another headache I don’t need, nor do I believe again that ALL instances of them being hacked are cause of someone clicking something they shouldn’t have and that isn’t changing.

Concurring with what

said, jumping at the first opportunity is a pretty bad way of finding any success there. The YouTube channel NoTextToSpeech covers a lot of these discord scams and hacks and exploits. The really nasty ones work when you're not looking (since discord can have multiple instances across multiple devices, which is why I always check my Devices tab in user settings to make sure only I'm connected to my discord) before changing your account credentials to lock you out and force you to go through discord support while they do their thing - sitting on your account and watching stuff being typed, before you make mention of leaving and changing your status or logging out before going on the offensive.

correct. that and two factor authentication, as frustrating as it can be at times, help a lot.
