Well, I was tempted to post a big, whiny depression journal today because I'm feeling like crap. Instead, I'm going to do something positive, sorta, and post a new recurring journal feature I call "What I'm Listening/Watching/Reading/Playing Now." In this journal I will be posting about whatever I'm currently into and what I wish OTHER people knew about.
First off... Music. The Vitamin String Quartet. Can I say right off the bat that I wish I'd heard about this band to begin with? Basically, they take pop music and metal and play them as a string quartet... Turning songs like Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce into THIS. ....TRULY epic. How did I EVER live without music by these guys?!
In terms of reading, I'm reading through a couple of webcomics. I'd like to recommend Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire. This, quite simply, IS the greates webcomic I have ever read. Taking place in a fantasy world with dozens of twists on the cliches, Dominic Deegan is a fortune teller gifted with clairvoyance, precognition, and visions. Using his gifts, he and his friends and family fight demons, Infernomancers, evil lawyers, idiot sports stars, and horrors from beyond time and space. At times a bit sappy and idealistic.... But honestly, I LIKE sappy and idealistic. I've met the artist who does this, and he is the nicest guy in the world.
What I'm watching right now... Hrmm... Well, there's Glee, of course. But what I'd like to talk about in THIS journal is Young Justice. Those of you who know me, know how much I HATE the state of American cartoons today. Patronizing, mindless drivel with no plots and bathroom humor. In the past ten years there have only been three series that I'd even consider worthy of being called entertainment... The DC Animated Universe series (everything from Superman to Justice League Unlimited), Megas XLR, and of course, Avatar: The Last Airbender. When the DCAU ended with Justice League Unlimited, I was truly sad.... but now it has begun anew with Young Justice. Unlike Teen Titans which started strong, but fell apart in later seasons, getting caught up too much in the comedy and anime, Young Justice is all drama and action. THIS series is what Teen Titans SHOULD have been.
Taking place in the DC Universe "Earth-16," the Justice League has become celebrities... and can no longer operate in secret. This makes it very hard for them to fight crime. Luckily for them, Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad want to help out. Joined by Superboy (a clone of Superman, and one of my favorite comic book characters EVER), Ms. Martian, and more, Young Justice is a covert team of superheroes-in-training, who go in where the League can't. This series is dark, mature, with blood and violence... and the creators have practically CONFIRMED that characters WILL die.
As for what I'm playing... Kingdom Hearts Recoded. I'm still playing through it, but can I say that Olympus Coliseum is quite possibly the most awesome thing I have played in a long time? I also deplore the state of RPGs today, where ACTION is emphasized over classic gameplay. I MISS the days of the Turn-Based RPG. And Olympus is a throwback to that, where you and your party battle your way through dozens of levels and mazes. The rest of the game is awesome too, but I love this throwback.
