Spotted or striped ...

Or maybe some kinda mix. It's a tough decision when it comes to what sort of hyena character to make! Feel free to share any thoughts ^^

could  do a mix. Maybe one part of the body transition to one style to another semi gradually? or pick based on what type of vibes you wanna put out. To me stripes gives off a sophisticated look white spots kinda gives off a casual look.

Brown hyenas have legs and heads that look like striped ones, and their body is just a floof explosion that would have been very chic in the 80's!

I read a very informative paper giving an overview of striped hyenas, particularly best practices for keeping them in zoos (their numbers are in need of a boost, and zoos can have an important role to play). It's interesting how striped ones are apparently quite tameable and trainable, but their nature makes them far less social than spotted ones. The recommendation is to keep stripeys in mixed sex pairs but to make very sure that they have enough space and a suitable setup so that they can be alone if they want.

Maybe I'll go for a mix of traits, given the pros and cons of both species in terms of their behaviour.

I've been wanting to make one inspired by a maned hyena aka the striped ones wanting them to have a hair metal aestetic

Brown hyenas would have been pretty chic in the 80's when having a great big poof of hair was the in thing.
