If you seen the documentary works of Ken Burns, then you seen my friend’s work as he did the special effects and videography on the documentaries and other PBS shows. One such work won him an Emmy on Special Effects; excuse me as I forget the exacting details, the documentary on the Silk Road where Europeans and Chinese crossed to get to the other side. The special effect was an animation done on a replica of an ancient map and showed the trails as they followed lines of the Silk Road. Basically he made a color ink copy of an ancient map, and then stop motion animation the growing trails on how the Silk Road was formed using a yellow high-lighter. The yellow high-lighter reacted with the paper, turning the trail from yellow to brown. Everyone thought it was done on computers, and special software. He admitted that if he did it on computer, it would have taken him longer to complete it.
Until the 2020s, much of his special effects he did digitally were done on Amiga computers, then things switched over to Mac and PCs.
Bill Cammack, I’ve known him since he was like 10 years old. He had a lot of talent, intelligence and wisdom, especially for one of his age. Oddly, he was focused on a career in working on TV and Video, but for a kid living in the ghettos of NYC, such dreams are almost impossible to reach. But he found his way and actually achieved his goal. Not many can say that from where we all grew up.
He also did some side gigs as a live DJ.
He was only open to a few, though he has a great following. His FB Page has 4.7K “friends” and 11.5K “followers,” which was strange as he was a loner, focused and driven. He was well liked by everyone around him, and never had to say anything bad about anyone.
I could write for the next several hours, and still not think it is good enough for him.
Here’s to you Bill, you did so much from so little. Glad to see you made it in life. You will be missed.
Until we meet again.
