Found a new webcomic recently: Rock Rocket and the City of Galanax It has powerful aliens, and Sci-fi setting, technobabble, a cool super hero and more. I've been enjoying it very much.
It got me thinking about something I have seen many times in creative projects. How passion can make up for a lack of many things.
If I were to look at Rock Rocket through a very critical lens I could see many flaws: The art is simplistic, the plot is somewhat cliché, the character interactions can be awkward. It lacks finesse, it lacks polish, it has all kinds of sharp edges that might turn one away.
But, I don't care about any of these things. Because I see a person who is burning with passion to tell a story. He focusses on the things he cares about and works on the other things the best he can. For example since fighting is a key focus, he really honed in on showing the action. You got smears, speed lines, explosive linework and anything that shows speed and impact of the action... and the aftermath. He doesn't stop to think "Is this necessary for the story I want tell?" he goes "This is fucking cool and it's going in!"
And for me it works. There are tons of highly polished pieces of media to consume if I want to. But you know what? Polishing takes the edges off. And if you want a gem to shine it needs to have some edges and sharp angles. ______________________________________
The same goes for NSFW by the way. There are some weird comics and pictures out there, that only exist because 1 person was. "I need this to exist and no one else draws it so I have to." And that makes it hot, even if I am not into this particular kink.
One comic I recall was a cat that vaccumed trashbags with her dick and turned them into cum. Not a fan of trash, but the person behind it really was into that and that made it hot.
That is probably why a lot of NSFW AI art doesn't really tickle me, because it lacks the passion behind it.
So be passionate, be weird, be you. I can get the homogenized slop burger at McHollywood anyday.
