Question for you tech type artists.

by
I work in traditional mediums; pen and paper, then scan my work to present here.  I use Firealpaca and I'd like to know if there is a way to delete the paper and keep the line work so that I can apply digital colour afterwards.

it depends on what kind of pen you use. it's easier if you use a wet ink that can make very dark lines. markers also work well for this. they scan more easily and then you can use the magic wand tool and remove any stuff you don't want while keeping the lines.

but if you want it to look really good, you'll have to make uniformly dark and very steady lines.

make sure the tolerance of your magic wand tool is set to how much you want the tool to remove.

this method can be quick, but it's also easy to make it look sloppy, and depending on how well you do, you might have to clean up a lot too!

There's a command called "DARKEN" which when applied turns everything transparent so if you us that on your image layer and put that on top of an all white layer you can treat your image like a coloring book and everything black will be completely opaque. I'm not familiar with your program so I don't know where that command would be but if you have an "EDIT" tab check it for a Layers menu and in that menu you should find a "BLEND" tab and "DARKEN" would be there.

Good luck and hope that helped a little.

I found a similar tool called Extract Lines.

Prepare for the end result.

I start with pencil and paper as well. But after scanning, I create a layer and go over all my lines with the paintbrush tool in black. It's time consuming, but the result is a clean outline. Then it'll be easy for you to color.

Tried that, so much work that I just went straight traditional.

I use a pencil for the rough sketch and then ink it with a pen. Then I erase the pencil, scan and adjust the contrast to eliminate any pencil remains or smudges.

I should have done that with my early comics, you can see the blue-line.  Non-Photo Blue my ass!

My 2 cents.
In the past when sketching in pencil and coloring digitally I would try to get the best scan possible by erasing any smudges on the paper and placing a second white sheet behind it to make sure the scan picked up detail ok.  (also clean the scanner super good)
Once on digital I make a copy, and this copy I would Desaturate the layer so only the lines have information.  From there I use this layer as a normal digital sketch/line layer.  If the lines look too pale what I often do is copy and paste the layer on top and merge them if I'm pleased with it.

You can use the "clone tool" in GIMP instead of erasing the lines.
Also, *snort* when you make a scan, you are forcing a perspective directly-on the paper.  It is unlikely this is the actual position you see the art as you create it.  Your eyes are never actually on the level of the scanner, basically *oink*

The paper has actual texture *re-REET* so you cannot just "delete the paper" without deleting the lines or completely changing their texture and edges.
I mean, *oink* you could use some kind of AI-type tool to just smooth them out?

You can just 100% opacity brush over the *oink**SNORT* background when you color.  Or use "overlay" layer setting.  I do it differently each time, myself~! xB

I use sai2.  Krita is also good and free, so is GIMP.  A lot of artists use clip paint studio but that costs money supposedly.  Firealpaca I used like 10 *oink* years ago, and it was basically SAI but without the nice blending but with additional "shape" tools that SAI never ended up getting.

You should work with the paper, not against it~! xB
