Trolls

Trolls?
Trolls!?
Where have all the trolls gone?
They are not under the bridge like they used to be, and from what I can tell, they have moved on again from the obvious places on the internet as well.
So where are all the trolls!?

It all began 2000 years ago when the first dial-up modem became affordable for the average household. I was there to see it happen, me, like so many others, was the beta tester of the internet, the pioneers of the world getting fully connected!

Forums! MSN! AOL chat rooms, welcoming family websites before Facebook was even a thing! You could even talk to another person on the other side of the planet for pennies!!
It was mind-blowing!

As the internet progressed, we all started making little nooks for ourselves, You could join a car group with maybe a 1000 people in it, or even an art group. or even a dedicated sonic group. thousands of small corners of the web you could join and feel welcomed.

Then.. the trolls came. And boy oh boy did they come in numbers. Their style was to be blatantly rude, saying things like "haha your mom's gay" or even faint-worthy stuff like "U MAD BRO!?" after getting a rise out of people. Back then, comments like that actually had some level of effect on us because it was a brand new concept of someone with no identity blatantly being offensive without consequence.

You would say nowadays, how can you be offended by something so trivial?
Welcome to the world of Troll evolution! An internet arms race, if you may.

So, where IS username xxXUSUKMYDIK4FUNXxx gone?
Nowhere! Right here among us, just with a different name, different tactic, but with the same level motive.

I'm not going to go into the reason why trolls exist and why they do what they do, that's for another day whilst I cling onto my last bit of relanvancy, I just want to show how to look out for them.

"Trolls" are advanced, dynamic, and adaptive.
"Trolls" these days are inherently friendly and work hard to get themselves into some level of status, and with the rise of so many people that have gotten popular over the years, they have flocked to individuals who are lonely, vulnerable and naive. And when they set up a nest, they tend to communicate with each other and start setting the foundations to take that individual down. Today, we call it 'cancelling'.

>>Misinformation<<
Is their most powerful tool. This can take any shape or form, and it can be so complex that it throws the smartest of us all off the scent, but the main method is usually what I call the "rabbit hole" method, setting up a chain of dialogue that goes down an infinite spiral of factual loops to adutate, demorilise and tire the victim.

Here is a crude sample of a rabbit hole troll;
a) I love pasta!
b) You mean noodle?
a) no, pasta, I really like pasta
b) noodle is technically a type of pasta
a) no, pasta isnt a noodle!
c) bro hates noodles!
b) But they are made of the same ingredients
a) yes! But they are a different shape from noodles!
c) bro, are you actually calling noodles "different"!?
b) That's harsh dude
a) It's just fucking pasta!
c) dudes a noodle hater.

You get the point, but this method gets used to an infinite level of detail to tire out the victim and make them lash out, making it easier and easier to paint this stark twisted image of the individual that is being targeted.
a)  "The victim" Typing dumb shit on the internet
b)  "The Instigator" will rally the first attack to probe for weakness
c)  "The Recruiters" tries to rally a mob using trigger words just so it turns into a frenzy

This is just obvious surface-level stuff, but buckle up buckeroo and fetch your tin foil hats, baby! because these narsasistic scum bags are even smarter than you think.

>>cocoons and echo chambers<<
Some trolls have advanced beyond even instigating, and have gotten to a skill level where they make popular figures and even artists feed on themselves through emotional drip feeding. (Please don't ask me why people do this to each other) It's your usual "shoulder to cry on" type of person, I can't stress enough, these people are RISKY to say the least, and it's all about control. When you tell a random stranger on the internet your personal struggles, family problems, financial problems etc. you're literally handing over your firmware for someone to control you and use against you.

Their primary job is to keep you isolated and defenseless. They keep you believing that your only friends are on the internet, and they will work super hard to make sure you stay under their thumb, or at least keep you in the same situation. Now, I'm not saying "internet friends" are inherently bad people, I'm saying that if you have some level of mental baggage dumped on the internet and nothing has really changed over the years, then you may need to start looking for the enablers keeping you from getting past life hurdles, tramaus, etc.

Don't believe me? Just cut a single strand that binds an emotional enabler's control over you and watch the adverse reaction they have.

Look, I'm starting to ramble and I'm losing train of thought.

Cheers for reading. Please stay safe out there.

Edit: I could go on and on about the dynamics and complexities of people being barstards to each other,
But my dyslexia is catching up with me, and my head is getting tired.

When you study the loons like I have, you see a lot of patterns. Emotional manipulation is a really strong tool in their box. I just started blocking them out of my life, and I've been healthier psychologically. I've seen some try to cancel me, I don't care. I'm not relevant enough anymore.

People will always be angry at something, they want an enemy, and sometimes they make imaginary enemies when they can't find them, or they make up reasons to hate someone.

A moral of the story: trolls, as a species, are evolving (devolving)?
into something different.. examples:
- the «senpai notice meeeeee»
- the attention seekers (not the same beast) (i AM a bit guilty of this, sometimes)
- the «whatever the topic, i'm experienced and trustable. ask me things»
- the «wall of texters»
and so on.... look, sometimes they are creepy but (mostly) harmless;
pick them with the usual grain of salt   ⟩:-⦆

Sorry to be a pedant but I wouldn't call what you described/demonstrated in this journal as 'canceling.' I'd call it 'harassment.' I think it's an important distinction, because the term 'canceling' is too closely associated with thin-skinned attention-whores getting angry over being criticized, and calling it 'canceling' minimizes the seriousness of the phenomenon you described.

Otherwise; an excellent journal.

This is what I mean about rabbit hole trolling, call it anything you want. Bullying, trolling, cancelling, baiting, harassment, torment, persecution, provoking, teasing, the list goes on. But the complexity is that trolls themselves can use these catchwords themself as a deflection regardless of their true meaning.

E.g, above with the pasta vs. noodles, c) the "Recruiter" can say that a) the victim is trying to Cancel Noodles, therefore the outside audience (the mob) will see the catchword and dog pile in, it doesn't matter about definition and meaning, it's just how words are used by design/intent.
StarRabbit

Oh, I apologize if I fell into the very same rabbit-hole you were trying to demonstrate. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I didn't think about it from the perspective of the trolls using the term and what they could/want to accomplish doing so. It's av ery astute observation.
Bloodhawk
2 days, 4 hrs ago
yea honestly, it's a whole catch-22. As an observer of a conversation on a theme like this, it can be even harder to really know if something is just a heated debate that has broken the confines of civility, or whether or not it's just a troll working hard to escalate the conversation into a negative space, that's what's so insidious about it.

And what really doesn't help is that having dumped our passion and beliefs onto the internet has created such a good breeding ground for them to the point that we are all punching at shadows and accusing each other of the same thing.

" It's your usual "shoulder to cry on" type of person

I never trusted these types, it's why I openly vent my woes and frustrations for the whole world to see, nothing said in DMs is anything I can't say in public forum. I'm to old to have orbital coddlers sucking up to me and I'm to old to do that for others.

I just want banter, funny memes and art that's it.
Bloodhawk

The friends I have made on IB don't always agree with me, so we childishly bicker, squabble and argue over the dumbest stuff and when we get our differences aside, we play games online and chill. I wouldn't have it any other way. I think it is certainly different for women in the fact 9 times out of 10 you're going to get a guy who is like "YOU ARE WOMEN, MAYBE WOMEN WILL MAKE MY BABIES" and yul have a bunch of creeps ready to be that beta male backup boyfriend (shoulder to cry on dude) always waiting in line playing the long game. I've seen it so many times, and some people genuinely lap it up.

I'm a guy, we are hard-wired to always read signals wrong, the human race's sustainability exists because of male stupidity and persistence. sooo, any guy that says he is not talking to you objectively is a liar, so seeing you are giving me attention, let me leave Xan and we can run away together into the sunset.

Long story short; Yes, I like memes and banter too
TheRealMedley

You aint wrong, I have always been envious of male friendships and the way they can bicker back and forth and end the night with a game of league or heroes of the storm, meanwhile I am just trying to join a VC for Monster Hunter and not get 20 people thinking they need to coat tail me or try to make me their in-game GF, even tho i sound like a nasally 12 year old boy with asthma.

I no longer get orbiters clinging to me anymore, prolly because I'm super vocal about being married with a kid, and thats a great turn off for most creepers, although while I was a preggosaurus rex there were those who double downed the creep factor lmao, like they asked for belly pics it was worse than the feet guys, at least with feet guys they are willing to pay 🙄

Oh, for sure. There are definitely the types that seek out & lap up the male attention & like you say, it gets in the way of actually being able to play games. I can't deal with people like that, too much of a personality clash. xD;

yep, I get pretty sick of all the ladies queuing up to get a piece of me, I can't play a single game without a girl coming up to me asking how big my balls are and how long my dick is. I'll be chilling playing a game and all I'll hear Is offensive stuff like "give us some dick picks yuh pussy teasing little bitch" and sometimes I sit and cry for hours knowing I'm just this object to them.

The darker side to our comradery is that being born with penis comes with this unspoken understanding that we are all a hair trigger away from being conscripted against our will and shipped out to play with the other boys firing bullets at our forheads, I know that sounds stark and out of contrast, but mud fights, ruff housing and pointing out each others flaws is just another layer of tribal pre-battlefield training that still never really "evolved" out of the human race. I think we are genetically driven to at least all hold hands and laugh about it when we all have to walk into fires.

You may envy male relationships, but I'm sure you don't envy the high male suicide rates ^ ^;

Yeah, trolls just aren't what they used to be like way back in the day, that's for sure. Having grown up through the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s, my observation is that trolls tend very much to be a product of their era, with the 90s trolls, for instance, having typically employed the "extreme" or "edgy" methodology. In fact, one could aptly say that generation of trolls consisted mostly of prototypical "edgelords", who were always just "on". Something to keep in mind is that starving trolls will eventually cannibalize each other (although the taste is bitter and unpleasant), which can actually be very amusing to observe... from a safe distance.

Now, if I'm being completely honest, every once in a while I'll be an "accidental troll", because I tend not to take the internet very seriously, and literally forget that other people may be more... sensitive, I suppose is the word.

It's a short based on a story of the same name by (sir) Terry Pratchett. If you're at all familiar with the Discworld novels, you may recognize Cohen the Barbarian, e.g.

What is best in life? "Hot water, good dentistry, and soft lavatory paper."

I believe there were also two series based on Light Fantastic and The Watch... which weren't exactly fantastic, but still worth a watch.

>Their primary job is to keep you isolated and defenseless. They keep you believing that your only friends are on the internet, and they will work super hard to make sure you stay under their thumb, or at least keep you in the same situation.

Describing NPD in a nutshell. :D Narcissistic Personality Disorder types LOVE to browbeat and manipulate you for their fun, and play victim or feign ignorance the moment you call them out on their shit.

More importantly, from within the fandom, you'll find some artists like to offer art extremely low prices and fail to deliver for months on end, bragging abotu how easy it is for them to do the art, yet will find every excuse under the sun to stall and delay completing the comission. They like it when you get upset with them essentially fucking you over. Their egos are extremely fragile too... Not just for show but also because they lack emotional connections with other human beings. They like to keep an echochamber of sycophants to help gaslight and kick you when you're down too. When they're not stringing people along with the art they owe people while knowing full well they're going to do things to emotionally distress and upset them. Hell, I'm sitting in a few disc servers where this is exactly what goes on.
You cant trust anything they say or talk about because its just one giant red herring and lie.
Repeating the same ones and memory holing the problems by constantly piling new problems, usually financial in nature.
I honestly think these artists are unemployed and are just milking people.

They constantly deny, devalue and dismiss anything you have to try and make themselves feel better.

Honestly the only way to easily "win" against them is not to play. And if you ever wanna hurt them, just tell them "no" or ignore them when they specifically want you in on something and make you an offer they assume you cant refuse..
SamanthaIndigo
2 days, 19 hrs ago
I should also add that these artists often will change details that are outside of what you want, knowing it will upset you and again, further stall and delay fixing it just to fuck with you...and then complain to their server of sycophants that you're the big problem and are being too fussy about what your getting. a "How dare you not accept my majestic masterpiece I made change to details on to further string you along over."
Bloodhawk
2 days, 3 hrs ago
This has gone a little beyond the scope of "trolls".

Unreliable artists aren't great. You should always do your research on artists, and always remember that creativity is not always a switch you can just turn on. But that's not to say I've never seen an artist on benefits religiously take people for a ride > ^>; But I can also see why some artists find benefits more reliable than commissions, I just wish there weren't so many narcissistic theatrics behind some of these artists' believing their own narrative.

And that's not to say that some of these artists take on a huge overload and instantly burn out just to pay rent (Xan and I had to do that once, and it was miserable). But either way, the two major sides of the coin is moron commissioners wanting rocket jet packs that can make their car fly for 1.99$ VS commissioners surrounding them self with gooners and simps ready in the wings to nurture the artists fragility.

The only thing I really suggest is not to look at artists as 9 to 5 contract workers, but more street grifters shouting our wares, and if you keep losing money to the same market stall, then it's a kinda "shame on you" situation. Most of us are trying to survive (especially now with AI), I've been lucky to escape the street rat behavior that other artists still have to play, So I can only speak on this subject from a privileged position.
SamanthaIndigo
21 hrs, 44 mins ago
In the things you bring up, you are right, and I agree with you. (Hubris demands I stop here.)

Looking at my post, the details I left out, and the lack of personal experiences shared where this is witnessed. I do apologize for not breaking down and writing detailed novels on why I found it to be a trolling behavior. In proofreading, I still feel this was the best way to talk about it, but it came off passive-aggressive. :c

Since I was also venting something that had been pent up a while, too. I must also accept its easy dismissal. Being a stranger, I should allow it to be treated under Hanlons Razor or feel mercurial because waiting so long. (Several years is a bit much, no?)

To diverge front topic, with apologies:

This fandom happens to be full of flakes, con artists (both literal and figurative), professionals who throw much of their free time into making a hobby into a living, and those who are seeking to draw something and share it with the world.

I admit there have been times I jump on getting a commission and leave the artist open to put their ideas down. These I dont complain about as they were meant to be open-ended. Let them show what they wanted to do with that character. Loved it.

Comissioners should have what they want shared and spoken about in detail with the artist so the artist understands what they're getting into, and they can negotiate a price vs. what level of details are applied. After getting refs and details, negotiate with you for what level of detail you want for the time they put into the pic.

Having lots of ref pictures helps a lot, too! I really enjoy this because it gives me the option to save up for something really big or get an invoice to make payments on. I like to pay ahead anyway.

Just wish with some artists I wouldn't be put on back burner while I watch other comissioners get their art completed for months/years. Especially when they are incredibly prolific. I do my best to give a few months leeway before I start asking about progress or if it's even started.
I don't want to harass and give that person reason to resent me. I don't know what kind of situation they're in in RL, nor do I want to make the commission process more of a stress than it really should be. I'm not gonna whack their hands with a ruler for not getting it done, especially if they have a sizable backlog. I've made it a point to ask about turnaround time now because I've been burned by this so often.

If it's something intended for an event, I will ask them if they think they can finish it in time for it? I have myself to blame if it was done at the last minute.

Anyways, apologies for my garrulous rants and disjointed thoughts. I typed this up on a phone. Thank you for listening.

You're fine, it's been a fun read nonetheless, plus I get to play with my own vanity and pretend to be agony-arent for a brief moment. And please don't think I'm dismissing your blight, I've been practically robbed twice on this website by two prolific, well-known artists, but I feel zero need to name and shame. Oh and also, I've had 4 VA artists I've dumped money on to help them buy recording equipment, take the money and run over the years, and once again felt no need to name and shame just because it's still a "shame on me" situation in the fact I can't expect dumping money on a complete random stranger would not end poorly.

So don't worry, even if my reply sounds like inflamed self-righteous twaddle, just understand that I'm swallowing my own medicine here too lol

When 6 months pass, I feel it's best to just assume that money turned into support for an artist I enjoy and just not get commissions from them again.

And getting robbed by so many VA's, I just need to swallow my pride and move on.

Then there are the clingy, emotional needy types that turn into trolls.  A split second after you log in to whatever chat platform you use the most they DM you instantly with "Hi!" or "What's up?" and if you don't answer within 10 seconds, its followed up with "Hello?  Something wrong?"
"...Did I make you mad?"
So you get around to replying to them in your sea of different channels, groups, and DMs and they are fine for a little while.  But soon enough:
"Dude, why are you ignoring me?  Seriously, did I do something wrong?"
So by now you're getting annoyed and you say something like "Calm your tits, I'm just busy is all."
"Oh. Busy.  Okay.  I'll leave you alone then."
"Don't mind me, I was just feeling down and saw you log on and got happy.  I should've known better."
This can go on and on leading up to them threatening to do something to themselves because you're "ignoring them".
Eventually you block them, tell them to go get help or something along those lines.  Then they are spamming edited copies of their conversation with you everywhere to show people how horrible you are and how much you hurt them.

Once again, trolls can take either side of this human dynamic.

The two sides of the coin are people who have too many friends to make a meaningful friendship/relationship, narcissists who don't find any value in meaningful relationships and treat others as disposables, and those who use relationships/friendship to control and feed their insecurities to then feed back to a support group. Every single one of these types of behaviors allow trolls to have a vector into someone's life and cause havoc.

But someone being needy VS standoffish doesn't define a troll, it's the people who capitalize on the negative space we leave behind with our human social shortcomings.

Needy people are annoying as heck, but people who keep you on a disposable Steam/discord/telegram list of friends are just as narcissistic as the attention seekers.
So pick your poison, Trolls don't care which one you choose. xD;
