Heard of this the first time recently and think it makes a fair amount of sense.
Etymologically only meaningful to a limited degree (means as much as "place together drawing", comparing with "synthetic" and "photography").
However with the more modern understanding of "synthethic" (hence, there's the furry species "Synths" xD ) and the association with photography fits.
Like a photographer, they make art out of something that already is there. The one achieves their result through finding the right motif physically, adjusting light, camera etc; the synthographer does so through the right prompt (or control graph) and LoRa.
After all "AI art" makes way less sense since there is no such thing as "intelligence art", artificial or not. And "gen(erated) art" is really vague and implies there is no human element at all.
So maybe this can be a word that does not insult either "side" and be accepted? What do you think?
P.s. an interesting fact: In many languages, including English, but very noticeable in German, a common synonym for synthetic contains word for art. Kunst -> künstlich. Art -> artificial.
