There's plenty of Discord alternatives out there, but the biggest issue is whether or not people use them. The two best alternatives I would recommend at this time are Revolt (which has a familiar UI to Discord) and Matrix. Both services have most, if not all of, Discord's feature set that's relevant at least.
Matrix is the preferred alternative as it is fully FOSS, but for our purposes, we can't depend on using matrix.org accounts and servers, which complicates matters.
