On the idea of  Transparency.

by
Hello everyone! Sorry it's been a while since I last posted. I've been continuing to work, I even took some commissions for some friends to get my feet wet with the idea, I just haven't gotten around to posting much of my work recently as the months have gone by.

I recently had my eye on an new artist. I had a suspicion that they were most likely tracing over AI art because their artstyle had both shifted and improved massively from amateur work to Marimo-esque quality in less than a month. I talked to various other artist friends, some who had even initially complimented their work, only for them to agree with me that their work was most likely Ai traced.

I had sent a ticket last week to moderation to verify this user's work only to be met with silence.

I commented on their works once I had seen other artists start to notice their suspicious work. I was met with harsh pushback while trying to lay out my arguments as to why I believed the work was Ai traced.(Ex. Random lines traced by misunderstanding of diffusion, sudden jump of skill and style from piece to piece, near identical mastery of the style of a popular artist in a matter of days, Etc.)

They have posted evidence of their "process" and once again it is in an incongruent style that looks nothing like their prior works. It's safe to say is that I'm not convinced. The people who already believe them will continue to buy whatever they make up at this point. Though if this is enough to convince moderation that a suspicious artist isn't "tracing", then the lesson that I come out from this is:

Inkbunny has no moderation capabilities to prevent bad actors from simply lying about their AI usage.

I'm making this journal not with the idea of further fostering an environment of Drama. I've already blocked this individual and their submissions, I won't interact with them any further, and I won't mention them by name here. This is something of a P.S.A. for artists to realize that none of the AI rules/systems implemented on this site are made to your benefit, and that simply blocking the tags and pretending like Ai doesn't exist isn't a solution for us.

We need to be able to foster an environment of transparency. Not out of fear, but out of pride for our work. If we cannot even question the process of a suspicious looking piece without that question being seen as "Harassment" or "Drama starting" then it is too easy for bad actors to skim on by off the good will of real hard-working artists.

As such, and from here on out I'll do my best to post images of my process alongside my finished work.(Most likely my construction because I do that a lot, or even a timelapse if those don't end up taking too much data on my Pc.) Not out a need to prove that my work isn't Ai, but because I want to feel proud of the work that goes into my finalized pieces and I want to be able to share that with you.

I'd like to encourage other artists to do something similar in whatever way they see fit. To truly show the work and process that goes into their pieces and further foster an environment of understanding and transparency in our community.

It is a shame that the good will of these other artists is being manipulated and abused. Time after time again I've seen AI users lie and fool people, and is genuinely frustrating to go over the tell-tale signs over and over again.

also zog your sketches are so informative people will love em

It's frustratingly easy to blame myself for not immediately recognizing people posting traced and unlabeled work in bad faith, but it's far worse that on sites that are built and thrive off of the work of artists, both the people responsible for maintaining the rules and the people that visit it are so eager to start pointing fingers at those who know the process better than anyone else, rather than to listen when they cast reasonable doubt. It genuinely makes me want to remove my work from places like these knowing that people who don't know nor care about the difference between genuine art and generated images are simply going to treat what I do like it's just more "material" to be used.

From the way the counter evidence video looks, the process is highly suspicious, not just in line quality but from the way the lines are added with neither proper construction nor proper use of the model they're supposedly using as a base for their image. The way it comes off is that its not actually being drawn but rather they're erasing the mask from a layer with a clipping mask applied to it. If the video did a better job at showing the start up of the drawing or heck, showed a full start to finished piece with coloring and shading then that could work to debunk any claims of tracing or use of generative tools, but as it stands all the video has done is make me more suspicious.

In the end i guess the best thing is to forget about the person and let them be since you blocked them; everyone has their own way to do art, but "the normal way" to draw usually starts with construction lines and basic shapes--references aside--; it does make me put on a tinfoil hat.

since i blocked ai im not sure how big of a problem has it become on the site;  this whole situation probably escalated too much, i wish we could be back to the times where the worst things were real people plagiarizing each other, i mean at least those were easier to know :c

I'm sick of people not labeling AI generated posts. I would honestly hope for the nuclear option of banning generated stuff altogether. But if that's not going to happen because of greed or AI obsessors cope, we need to push people more to tag that stuff.
