Wrong Code?

Had to change my phone number with Walmart's website today.  They sent a code via text message to my phone to verify, and I looked at it, typed it in, clicked the button... and the code was rejected.

I double-checked the code on my phone with the code on my screen.  Same code.  I triple-checked.  Same code.  Quadruple-checked.  Same exact numbers in the same exact order.  Site kept saying it was the wrong code.

Clicked the button a few times.  Wrong code, wrong code, wrong code.  I got so scared of losing my account over this bullshit that I screamed at my screen, "IT IS THE RIGHT CODE YOU STUPID FUCKS!!!!!!"

Started freaking out, wondering what I'm going to do, decided maybe it was a hiccup or something and had them re-send the code.  Got that code, typed it in, and it all worked fine.

What happened that made the website decide that the first code was wrong?  Answer: I don't know, but what I do know is that I entered the first code with my number pad on my keyboard, while I entered the second code with the top row of keys on my main part of my keyboard, on a whim.  My guess is that whoever coded the website decided that number pad entry was bad somehow, and also decided that people should "just know" this as there was no warning or other indication of using the number pad being a bad thing.  As far as the display was concerned, the numbers are identical.  An 8 from the number pad looks exactly the same as an 8 from the top row of keys on the main keyboard.

I could have kinda-sorta understood it had they actually said something, but there was nothing there mentioning it.  They just expect you to magically know.
