2024 -2025 check in

Hey all. Happy year of the snek!
I'm not sure if I should make these update journals every year if I don't have a lot to say but I'll do one now.

So I wasn't particularly productive in 2024 I'll be honest. I made about 4 pics, plus a sketch and spent the rest of the year doing fuck all.
I think my art motivation has been a bit fickle. I'll work on projects late into the night for a while but once I finish, I'll go into this phase where I don't want to even look at an art program for weeks until I start feeling guilty. I don't think it's the best art/life balance but it's kinda how it's always been. I'm not really sure how to improve on that.
This, coupled with my doomscrolling and the rise of the existential horror that is AI art have made 2024 a bit of a rough year for me despite nothing particularly bad happening.

This year I'll... well I'm not sure I'll do more art than usual but I've made an effort to cut down the doomscrolling at least. I also might try using different brushes to help beat back perfectionism. We'll see how that goes.

Pics I have planned this year include some new royal slave pics, maybe some pokemon pics from the backlog and to finally get the ball rolling on No Buybacks.

Anyway, I hope you've all had a decent year.

Can always be healthy to acknowledge the doomscrolling and see how it's making you feel. What got me away from doomscrolling was going through a bunch of videos and then asking myself (or my friend if they were with me) what I remember from what I just watched. If there was little or no answer, or I could only remember the last video or two, it was time to put it down.

As for the art thing, that one is much tougher. Maybe you're trying to impress someone or some audience, but in reality, you don't have to draw for anyone but yourself. You've proved that over the years. You draw what you want and your audience sticks around. There's an implied pressure to keep producing, but in reality, we're gonna stick around regardless. It's always a pleasant surprise when you pop up in my inbox.

Maybe one day, you'll lose your entire passion for art. Maybe you're working too hard into those evenings. But you have to find your balance, your happy place. That'll be the most important part in the end, and wherever that takes you, we're cool with that.

Thanks. That does sound about right. I feel like I'm not a "serious" artist. Some say you should draw every day as an artist but I could never manage that. Maybe that's ok though.

I do hope I never lose my "entire passion for art". It's one of the few things I do that feels like it matters to people. Also, who else is gonna draw out the ultra-specific fetish content in my head? Lol

A bunch of my artist friends are dreading the future because we're already at a point where AI can easily just replicate someone's artstlye if you know how to train it.

I'm personally not worried about myself since I don't consider myself a serious artist either, I just draw for fun. But I assume the future will only get worse for drawing for money, so it really motivated me to start doing game development.

Drawing art really should be about just enjoying the process itself. To me it's comparable to playing a video game, you do it for fun.
As for how to be more productive, I dunno how much this'll help but it's something that's been working for me, I just set a timer for one hour or two and then just focus on drawing with 0 distractions. The timer will ring before you know it and then you get to relax guilt-free since you've done something that day.

(I say that, but right now I'm in a phase where I've been drawing all day since morning till midnight, whoops. XD)

I really hope the process doesn't become the only thing worthwhile about making art. One of my favorite things is being able to look at a finished art piece that's wholly my own and being proud of it.
Most ai that I see has a pretty fake or generic look to it so I think we're still relevant, at least for now.

And thanks for the tip. I'll maybe try something like that at some point.

I'm not an artist, but my heart goes out to all the artists who are discouraged by the recent boom in AI art. At the very least, I hope you continue to draw for your own satisfaction and don't feel pressured to post anything for your followers.

That being said, I don't think AI would be able to capture the exact hyper-specific scenes as well as you do. You put so much thought and detail into each piece and its always a treat to get to zoom in and focus on a different chunk of it at a time. There's also a big world-building and story component to your work that AI art often lacks, it's obvious that you really care about your art and I hope you're proud of each piece because you really should be <3

Plus, as corny as it sounds, art is so much better knowing that it was made by a like-minded individual who shares the same interests or kinks as you. Even though it's all fiction, it somehow feels more "real"

Thanks! And yeah I was thinking about that. Like, sure an AI can spit out a picture based on a bunch of prompts but can it actually tell a story? I don't think. At least not really.
