A thought for the day...

by
The fact that I haven't died yet leaves open the possibility that I'm immortal.

Perhaps it's not a good idea to tempt fate like that.

there is in fact, a statistical improbability that you are indeed, immortal!

Immortality would be a curse.

I was watching a Youtube vid about a guy who was questioning the "immortality is a curse" thing.  I don't think he made particularly great arguments as to why it's not.  Part of it was comparing death to the titular dragon in "The Dragon Tyrant" fable.  The dragon is bad, and therefore we should seek to destroy it.  Although death is only obviously bad for those left behind.  Hard to take a poll of dead people and get their thoughts on it.  And those that would desire "immortality" don't really want that.  What they want is invincibility.  To be unravaged by time, disease, injury, and agony.  Who wants to be 1,000,000 years old and still physically aging while suffering from injury and all the cancer and diseases they've picked up, yet unable to die?  I suppose that's why the concept of heaven is appealing to many people.  A blissful invincible immortality.  But I still wonder what are you supposed to do for eternity?

I suppose I should expand it to "Immortality is a curse to one whose existence is measured in suffering outweighing all else." Even with my limited years I have been aware of my own senescence since an early age when I -knew- just -knew- I wanted to or was meant to take my life by either my own hand or by allowing life to do its dirty work without stepping aside from its terminal blow. I have been "suicidal" since just before the age of eight, and aware of of my mortality even earlier. I was also very aware of the genetic drive to prevent self-termination and how strong it could be considering how many times I almost offed myself accidentally (or became seriously ill) since I was born. (even at that youthful age)

I suppose if an immortal were capable of a form of "re-birth", and able to shed memory at will, they may alleviate the ever growing heavy burden of experience.

I suppose that's kinda what reincarnation sells.  Immortality where you don't remember your past lives.  You don't really die, you just start the game over with a different set of random stats.

I have a plaque like that custom made in my office:

“I have a midlife crisis every single day.
By that logic, I will live forever.”

I think what people want when they talk about immortality is to be immortal as long as they want it.  Get a little button somewhere where they can press it and be mortal again.  Cuz who wants to be boiling on the surface of a red sun?

Although the concept of immortality is rife for storytelling.  I got like a dozen of those floating around.

Nothing truly lasts forever I think people want to escape your fragility more then anything. More then mortal, less then eternal.

Give me a potion that guarantees I'll live to be 1,000.  That's all I'm asking for.

Of course, knowing me, I'll spend the last 500 worrying about my impending death.
