AKA: WAHHH, MARIA! the Movie.
Okay, this one's gonna be a shorter review than my previous Sonic movie reviews, where I went on and on in long essay form...
I REALLY don't have that much interesting to say about this one, honestly. It's an adaptation of Sonic Adventure 2, pretty straightforward, minus Boobs--Er, Rouge the Bat. Reviewing this movie feels like reviewing a 23-year-old video game that everyone in the Sonic fandom has already played a dozen times.
Does it do a good JOB with the adaptation? Yes. They actually managed to make me sympathize with Shadow, who I generally find an insufferable edgelord, and THAT'S a feat in and of itself. Keanu Reeves was the perfect choice for him, which I never would have thought of, but in retrospect is brilliant.
The human characters (outside of Robotnik) aren't nearly as insufferably obnoxious as they were in the first film, and SLIGHTLY less annoying than in Sonic 2. They're still there, and that's a BIG problem for the series. Seriously, who actually WANTED a live-action Sonic movie? We would have settled for a good CGI film...
AS for Robotnik (both of them), of COURSE Jim Carrey is the best part of the movie, as he has been in all three films. He's at full Ace Ventura wackiness, dancing and wobbling all over the screen, thoroughly gnawing every exposed bit of scenery until there's nothing left. He's fantastic.... and he FINALLY *FINALLY* gets to wear the Sonic Adventure Robotnik uniform.
The fight scenes are great, even if 90% of it is just live-action shots of landscapes with blue, red and gold blurs digitally superimposed upon them. The Super Sonic sequence this time around (and that's not a spoiler, if they did Super Sonic once, they were gonna do it again) is even better, and is proof of concept for a Dragon Ball movie, if Hollywood could be trusted not to fuck it up again.
Honestly, it's the post-credits stinger that's the most interesting part of the movie and the one I can't talk about, if I wanna keep this spoiler-free. But I have no idea where the franchise is going from here, other than a Shadow spin-off that will hopefully suck a billion times less than the Knuckles spin-off did.
Skye's Final Verdict: 80 out of 10. It's a minor improvement on Sonic 2 (because the humans are less obnoxious) and still a COMPLETELY average film that only reaches the heights it does because the bar for video game movies is so low that it's buried in Earth's molten core.
That said, it was a fun sit, and I found myself headbanging to Live and Learn. I want an mp3 of the orchestral version in the film for my playlist.
Also, bonus: NO FART JOKES in this one, OR product placement!!!
