I have been on a wuxia kick lately and for those who dont know what that is it's basically a genre of Fiction Focusing on Chinese folk lore and mystical and heavily focuses on martial arts fantasy.

it comes from the Chinese words Wu- Meaning Martial and Xia- meaning righteous so Wuxia means righteous martial artist or righteous warrior.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Forbidden Kingdom are decent movie examples of this genre but im looking for video games...

preferably ones that dont suck! XD

the happens to be two major issues with this...the first one is that these games are almost exclusively Chinese in origin so the English translations are often either non existent or...spotty...at best.

the second problem is that Chinese game developers...have not really had the best track record with me of producing quality games. Much like Korean MMOs...

that being said...there have been a few exceptions =p

there's a Chinese Indie dev team that put out a game on steam called "wandering Sword" and it's... well it's great! it's a Mostly ok translation but the game itself is a LOT of fun.

looks like Octopath traveler but it plays nothing like it =p if your looking for martial arts fantasy give this one a shot!

if your have any other suggestions, i'll look into them. ^^

IN wandering sword you begin the game as an absolute Nobody...wich is pretty standard in the wuxia world, and you can learn cultivation techniques to make yourself stronger and unlock your meridians acupunture points your Qi can flow through you master different martial menuvers ect You can use a Sword, a Saber, A Fist, a Pole arm, or a Hidden weapon (think ninja tricks) and the fights play out on a tactical battle grid.

each weapon has it's own specialty, Swords are good AOE and High damage,  and follow the whole.. flying sword, magic balde, sword intent tropes. they attack in Lines

Sabers tend be be AOE based as well but attack in collums.

Fist weapons tend to be single target or very small AOE and are high damage, as high as sword, but with much better dueling potential.

polearms are small aoes around the user and tend to be very defensive/supportive

and hidden weapons are debilitating and AOE/Range heavy.

ive had a blast with it and the game is hoenstly realy cheap for what you get.

I read an unconscionable amount of wuxia webnovel schlock. If you want something more light hearted try cultivation chat group.

Surpised the hell out of me I was expecting to get maybe a little fun out of it before the buyers remorse set in for "cheap, badly localized Chinese jank" that NEVER HAPPENED! games fantastic if a little to easy...wich is odd for a game in a genre were you need to grind allmost as hard as if you were really cultivating lol

Well, just a little known fact, Xiameng Game is/was before they decided to just change their name was/is actually owned by The Chinese Government. I'm guessing the Changed the name, to make it sound bit more friendly to the Western people.

Finally I get to talk about the most underrated game I've played and loved. There's an old rpg game called Jade Empire which I think is genuinely really, really good. By today's standards the gameplay is a bit clunky (it's 20 years old now >>) but if you're into story driven experiences it has some really good writing and feels a lot like you're the protag of some epic chinese myth or something. It was made by Bioware back when they were still good, if that means anything to you.

Cultivation simulator is a very in-depth wuxia game, Though has a huge learning curve. SSethseentech has a good video on youtube about it if you want to see a good rundown, Though has a very dry sense of humor as a fair warning

It's Wuxia the game. Though you ARE managing an entire school instead of just one person. Kind of. You also get your own character and select-able skills. It also has bunny boys/girls. Essentially the school gives you resources and lets you make new characters while your main character and others search for treasure, make treaties, and do other anime stuff to increase their power and the power of their next life.

Though thinking on it, it's not martial arts but sword work.

Wuxia actually MEANS "sword swipe sound" so yes, that makes sense.

Actually, the original word 武俠 (Wǔxiá) is hard to translate.
The first character means Martial, while the second means Chivalrous.

I was told it is onomatopoeia for the sound of a sword. Woosh-shoo!

Well for those interested.
Another Journey to the west.  Though I haven't finished it yet
Second The Elusive Samurai

Neither are like the movies about but both have a decent story with action and lore

For games? That could be a bit difficult, although loupgarou had a martial arts system that kinda fit the Wuxia vibe.

For films, you've gotta go old school IMO "The prodigal son" was one I watched recently that was a good martial arts giggle... Not so sure it's quite what you're going for.

I have been watching an walkthrough a few years ago called Tales of Wuxia and since I'm an huge addict on Fist/Palm styles.. ((An addict of unarmed combat)) and since then, I was getting an better understanding of the Wuxia Genre very well.. Yeah, Fist Weapons, to unarmed combat are my favorites when it comes to Wuxia-related things.. Although I have last year was watching an entire show called "Heavenly Sword & Dragon Sabre" And yeah.. to my suprise, ever since I watched Dragon Ball Z in my pre-teens and energy blasts were an rage & during the entire show's fight scene, I noticed the neigong ((Wuxia version of Shonen Manga/Anime's ki/aura manipulation)) visual effects and I have treated it as part of my nostalgia as well.. I'm trying to continue on Youtube to finish watching "Demi-Gods & Semi-Devils" and to be PRETTY Clear, it was incredibly great that it revolves more on neigong attacks in the fight scenes then physical attacks.. And Kevin, Neigong was my purest obsession since DBZ and at first when I watched the Wuxia shows, I was more into physical combat until years later I saw the colorless energy visual effects.. Although it's different than the battle aura you see in anime, but it is colorless but depending on which show I have seen most dramas/movies have colorless battle auras and some may have colors either way, It drove me to become obsessed with neigong since I watched Dragon Ball but thankfully, I was able to defernite the difference between the auras in Wuxia drama & films and in Shonen/Anime Shows by telling if it has colors or not Kevin.. Same goes for Xianxia Genre.
