Look, don't panic.

I know a lot of people in my own circles have been really afraid of what the recent victory of the sagging mattress in greasepaint will mean for them. I am here to bring some perspective for you.

First of all, these guys, yeah, they're fascists. There's no need to sugarcoat it, they fulfill every item on the list. Anybody dragging you into an argument of technicalities or trying to ridicule with Whataboutism is doing so in bad faith. Don't engage with them.

Secondly, yes, I absolutely understand they're dangerous. That's kind of the whole reason they have to be resisted. But. And I cannot overstate this:
Don't run away.
Don't delete your account or wipe all your art or any of that. In the first place, it won't do anything; if you've been a presence up 'til now and you matter enough to keep track of, the snoops already have records of you. But secondly, and more importantly, that's what they want.

The idea of banning porn– while ultimately a goal of the fevered fascist dream so as to enforce this hegemony of endless ignorant white babies being born to work in their deadly factories and mind numbing spreadsheet mills for next to nothing– is just too big of a reach for them right now. Who's going to do the work? Every government agency is critically understaffed, and those people hate making new agencies or giving them money. To say nothing of the fact that enforcement would be a massive lift; what are they going to do, throw 60% of the country in prison? There's more people in than out at that point, you're just reinventing castle towns. The logistics of it are laughably stupid.

Beyond the practical, there's the ideological. Fascists hate artists, not because of our politics or our aesthetic tastes, but for a much more basic reason: we have the ability to think outside of simplistic work-breed-die paradigms, and we illustrate those possibilities, spreading imagination in a tangible, shareable way. We make it easier for other people to imagine a better world, which is something the fascist cannot abide. If you take any lesson from the way things have gone since the Industrial Revolution, it's that the powers that be have been trying to use fear to make us scatter like rats, because individually we're much easier to stamp out and keep up the status quo (notice this is something rich neoliberals also do!). We only stand a chance when we stand together. Never apologize for art you make, art you buy, art you love and enjoy. Don't do the fascist's work for them, force them to do it themselves. Make them sweat for every last inch. You might as well– what the hell's left on the other side?

Reading through the list... the US was ticking a lot of them boxes already <.<

And even if they could remove any significant amount of porn from the net, it would just go underground. And when that happens the porn will just go wild. Because why hold back if anything is illegal anyway? Might as well jump into the deep end.

Past propositions have been acted on, not all succeed, but all are attempted. The Republicans do this kinda statement of intent consistently, just this time it's completely insane.

The only way this won't happen is if they're stopped, which so far no one seems to want to.

He literally said that specifically to try and dodge the heat. The truth is that he ***renamed*** it-- look up Agenda 47, and what's in THAT. It's literally just Project 2025.

That, and even if Trump himself isn't involved, most of his close circle are. Including, most damningly, JD Vance, who wrote the goddamn foreword.

Yuo want something wild look at the legal definition of PORN in the Untied States, simply put there is no national definition because there is a local factor and the idea of artistic value. Yes artistic value to the point a picture of a man with a bullwhip stuck up his ass isn't porn as it has artistic value
RandalDra

They also count Loli and cub or any underage fictional porn as crime under same category on the legal system as Child Porn the real ilegal ones featuring real life children. So it’s very hard to have a consensus.

Even so nothing stopping from being ruled constitutional again at least in Brasil that happens. The decision depends on the desire purely of the supreme court judge they can over-overrule at their desire's notice.

Actually it was ruled unconstitutional on the 1998 version which prompted the 2003 replacement

I've repeatedly pointed to the quote that sex crimes related to pornography and obscentiy are the only crime you can be in a empty room with a pencil and commit a felony that will have you on a list for life by doodling on a piece of paper with no interaction with other people. It's rediculous that it's enforced.

You'll find this is more of a local issue than something that gets to the national level as people can't afford to defend themselves and courts for one reason or another refuse to follow the higher court rulings

There are many things I could say in response to this, but I will only say this: It is my hope that in a year...two years...four years from now, we come back at this exact day, and we see what has changed.

If things have gotten worse, I will join protests.

If things have not gotten worse, but better, in some objective measurement, I pray you, and the fifty or so million who think like you, take a moment of introspection. That perhaps evil has not knocked on your door and asked to enter. I'm not defending the man, or his policies, or the predictions, or anything. I am merely praying that if...if a year passes, and something happens that you agree with, take note of it.

Well, Elon Musk is working closely with Trump, and the MPAA is on board with all this, and Sinclair owns a supermajority of broadcast news.

Like remember the BLM protests? Remember CHAZ? Remember how suddenly you didn't see any tweets about protests, a week or so later people were like "wait what happened to the protests?" and it turned out it's been going on still, just they're suppressed on twitter?

Then when Musk bought twitter that got even worse.

X is going to be the ministry of truth in Trump's regime so in four years, if you're a white perisex cisgender rich man, well everything will be great because you won't know what happened to the rest of us \o/

Heck, there was a pro-palestininan protest at D.C. right after the election and I had to dig to find it, we're not going to see any antifascist news when it happens. There won't be reports of ICE camping at schools or hate crimes.

50 million like me? I wish. I'm not a slave to ideology, as Zizek would put it. I don't even have a real champion; there's no Left Wing party in this country, just two right wing ones that differ on social issues.

The man stated his intentions, and on social issues, they're pretty much universally bad, so unless he was lying, yeah that's gonna get worse or stay the same.

If you're talking about the economy, I'm sorry to have to be the one to tell you that the President does not control the condition of the economy in our Neoliberal Capitalist system. Nobody controls it, in fact; that's kind of the problem with it modernly speaking. And Republicans treat any economic policy to the left of Milton Friedman as if it's Stalin Himself risen from the grave. Considering the top problems are affordability, wage stagnation, labor power and the ongoing Rentier Capitalism crisis, I'm thinking the dopey lead-addled boomers won't be saving us from this.

Assuming the worst about others just because of a political stance speaks more poorly of you than of them :/

Not all of them are stupid, and no, you really don't know, most of them have never made it public
Looking at who you follow, I could see more than 30 of them just in a quick look, and you'll never know because seeing your reaction will keep them quiet

And they'll keep lying to you and their followers because of the kind of person you are

What do you mean "the worst?" You think being stupid is the worst thing you can be? My brother we are born stupid, and it is only through the judicious use of good sense that you can ever hope to escape it. Stupid is the default. When I see people making dumb choices like supporting a fascist and then getting emotional about other people thinking that's foolish, all I can think is "Damn, your development is very stunted for your age."

People go against their own interests all the time. They're called Useful Idiots. The GOP has made it clear that they hate the queer, the disabled, the racial minority and everyone who is, in some way, different from their "normal". And that includes everyone on this site. We are, all of us, degenerates according to them. And if you think that's not the case, well. Leopards, faces, ect. Don't be surprised when it turns out you're not actually "one of the good ones."

I can't see a possibility of government censoring the internet mainly because of the fact Net Neutrality isn't a thing. That was killed by Trump, and that would have given the US government some control of the internet, or atleast had government-back Internet and WiFi that they could restrict freely unless you got a "Private server" from a third-party provider, like Xfinity Internet or Virizion Fios.
Norithics
2 months, 3 weeks ago
Well, 1) Bills to control the internet have in fact gone into effect despite NN not existing so you've got your facts wrong on what it does, and

2) Net Neutrality got axed to benefit ISP monopolies and for no other reason.

The priority list is preventing us from getting WW3 before we get GTA 6.

Argentleaf
2 months, 3 weeks ago
The so called "porn ban" is just an initiative to keep minors off adult sites, and even then it will just target the largest sites like pornhub, I doubt a site with nothing but furry drawings is even on that list
TrunksXV

Enabling all of Israel's worst impulses so that they inflame the entire Middle East which includes nuclear actors is a really funny way of "preventing" WW3. Liberals were terrible on this issue and conservatives are set to be even worse in the name of their christian death cult.
RegiosRhenac

I am holding to the vague hope that Project 2025 (Or however they try to rechristen it to avoid scrutiny) will mostly remain a load of unfulfilled campaign promises, but let's not fool ourselves: The problem is more than just the banning of porn. Videogames, literature... They are at least going to try and censor all that stuff, and while doing it nationwide is too much of an undertaking, you can bet your butt that a few states will grow bold enough to push for, at least, statewide restriction and control. And while I am not american, I am worried about this stuff bleeding into european countries, including Spain, my home. The moment censorship is allowed in one place, it will start spreading like a cancer.

But you're right about running away being futile. If we run away, it's like if we surrendered: We lose and they do whatever they want with us. And what they will do will not be pretty.

We've got dark times ahead, and more than ever, we need to work together, resist together, to sail through them.
PawzPuppeh
2 months, 3 weeks ago
That was my take, too. 2025 is frightening, but only in the hands of an administration that --

1. knows what they're doing
2. has a leader that knows how to guide others
3. is competent enough to do more than surface damage
4. is stable enough to have people staffed for longer than a handful of weeks.

If 2016-2020 revealed a gross lack of anything, it was incompetence.
Kalibran
