Ballot initiatives win you rights and wages.

A number of states passed increases to wages and sick leave during the election on Tuesday.

Alaska and Missouri voted to increase their minimum wage, and both they and Nebraska voted to require employers to provide earned sick leave.

Arizona also passed abortion access ammendment via ballot initiative.

These are the democracy wins the people can make even when the parties fail.

This part of democracy still functions.

Also the numbers seem to indicate Kamala and Trump under preformed their own party congressional, senator, and state legislators on the ballot.

My advice seems to have been heeded.

We should be disgust with where we are at as a nation.

But don't over look the victories we have managed to achieve.

The foundation of self governance works.

We just have to cut out the corrupt parties.

Keep involving yourself, stay informed, and challenging misinformation when you see it.

It's our duty to fulfill if we want to make any difference.

Because we have done more then the parties have in decades.

Keep up the good fight.

I know I'm not going anywhere.

if you want to change the nation you must look first to the local stage and not the national, well spoken. We cant expect the swamp to drain itself, only damage control untill enough people get sick of it and we actualy get the corrupt politicos out.

I know there were a couple ballot initiatives in CA.

Both lost.

One was to in effect ban prison labor.

The other was to raise minimum wage.

Surprised CA voted around 53% against that.

I can understandthe minimum wage thing... it's great on paper but in reality the majority of people in the US allready make mroe then the minimum wage SO raiseing its not going to do much except encurage businesses to raise  prices...im not saying im entirely opposed jsut syaing I understand WHY it's a very back and forth issue...

For Profit prison are a very corrupt thing and I honestly wish we would rethink that whole fucking thing... THAT is a LOBBYING issue with the prisons spending stupid amounts to keep that system in place...and nobody cares because fuck em there convicts.

not ALL of them are child molesters and axe murderers...they should pay there debt and be readmitted to socity...our current prison system is borderline salvery. Maybe forced labour is apropreate as apunishment for a time but the for profit aspect only incentivises corruption and the prison street prison revolveing door... hows that help the nation? it doesnt....

that one surpises me.

I get the concern about rising prices, and it does make intuitive sense. But a minimum wage increase has only a teeny tiny effect on prices. We're talking a few extra cents on a hamburger.

https://www.upjohn.org/research-highlights/does-increas...
https://washingtonstatestandard.com/2024/07/05/the-best....

Besides, as the second article points out, our minimum wage has only been $7.25 for a VERY long time and prices have still gone up. That's because of COVID fucking up supply chains and (most importantly) because of the rich price gouging us for their record-setting profits.

im not saying it's a stupid idea im saying the majority of Americans wouldn't be served at all or even slightly effective positively by a raise in minimum wage.

only entry level mostly high school age kids. Even WALMART doesnt pay minimum wage.

Good point. I don't think it should be the only thing we focus on. Better unionization would probably help more workers than raising the minimum wage since we would ALL benefit. Let's bully our elected officials into doing it.

That said, there are actually tens of millions of people who would benefit from an increase in the minimum wage and most are adults.

Plus, younger teens and their families are people too. Kids are having a really hard time right now, so even if it just benefited people about to move into adulthood, I think that would still be good for them and their parents and siblings.

these are high turn over jobs for a reason... they dont pay much often becouse there entirely unskilled labour that doesnt even require experiance in the feild the fast majority of people holding those jobs do not stay in them...

It might help but i dont think its even worth it it would be better to improve peoples ability to find better paying work  stronger economy more job opertunites... i know progressive and communists cant stand this term but the free market DOES adress these issues regulation often has the opasit effect... though dont get me wrong im not advocatieng for 0 regulation thats just dangeorus and stupid. XD

but overall yes we can do better

The markets provide education?

For free?

Free market is allowing goods and labor to travel between nations without restrictions.

The market wants immigration to fill in the gaps.

It does nothing for the consumer.
KevinSnowpaw

it depends on the market and the situation, Hell a while back your company PAY for your education, meny of them in trades still DO Wallmart will PYA to have your forlift cirtified they might even pay to get you electricaly cirtified and triained if you wanna go around setting up things in there stores...

they also pay for or subsidize higher education incentives for employes... I dont know how effective it is ive not done it but they DO offer that.

Depends on the company and the situation... Plumbers often pay out of pocket to train there new hires in the trade. If you want to go to school to learn social science stuff most companies dont pay for that.

I mean that sometimes unions fuck shit up... and sometimes unions are a necessary bludgeon. In the past they have been a great guard against employer abuses. Sometimes the Unions themselves (not the concept OF one but the indavidual union) can becomes a problem to however... I supose no salution is perfect.

We don't need to beat around the bush.

uhhh kinda? i feel more like it depends on the union...We dont want or need them everywhere in some industries they have even done mroe harm then good...

In other instances they have forced employers in times beofre we had better workers rights enshrined into law, to NOT treat there employees like human equipment! I kinda feel like it's fair to acknowledge that.

they are LESS important NOW but only because they more or less WORKED when they were needed. does that makes sense?

I personally don't think "unskilled work" is an actual thing. Folks in those jobs often work as hard as me. Some work harder.

I like restaurants and clean buildings. Most people do. As long as we need people to do those jobs, they should be able to afford stuff.

Plus it's VERY popular and a lot easier to sell to voters than other policies like union-rights. When you tell folks that you're going to raise the wages of tens of millions of people (mostly adults, but also the kids of adults) they are WAY more likely to vote for you.

I recommend calling your elected officials if the issue comes up. Don't dedicate your life to it or anything, but it's a good start.

I work in the field of "unskilled labour" and often use skills i developed on the job, so I get the feeling. The term feels allmosr insulting I know but it realy only means it requires no special training, degree or prior experiance and most positions in this field still pay better then minimum. Maybe we SHOULD raise it but aside from slightly devaluing any extra I may be makeing in the field it won't effect anybody at my job or any job in the town I work accept maybe one or two resteruants?

As the article I posted said, raising the minimum wage would benefit almost 40 million people.

If you know 0 of those 40,000,000 people, it is still the right thing to do.
KevinSnowpaw
1 week, 3 days ago
well there's ripple effects to everything And i tend to error on the side of caution before makeing that kind of choice. Im not upposed since im actualy very PRO enriching the economic power of the indavidual, being a capitalist.

But I would prefer to focus on impriveing the quality of life and cost of liveing, I feel like makeing your money go FARTHER is much more efficent and economicly healthyer then flateing the market with more currancy.

I am aware that a small amount of inflation is healthy for an economy though. im sure theres a give and take you cant just NEVER raise the wage after all.

Silver linings, I suppose. I gotta get the fuck out of the south though. Only ballot initiative we had was over some land thing- something about if a certain school district (not even near me) could use a certain chunk of state land or something? idk. It passed though.

Do as you must.

Personally the confederate state should never been readmitted to the union would have solved many of our problems.

My condolences having been born there.

To be fair, a whole lot of progress was made during Reconstruction. During that time they were back in the Union, but we made sure the treasonous assholes weren't in power.

It wasn't perfect, but I think if the North stuck to it the situation today would be MUCH better.

Baller! A few suggestions. Do NOT overdo it and try all this shit at once. Pick whatever peaks your interest.

1- If you're comfortable enough to throw some cash to good causes, check out https://www.charitynavigator.org/. They grade charities to make sure the money goes to what you want. Pick your baby (wealth inequality, getting money out of politics, organizers in your area, environment, education, LGBT rights, civil rights whatever) and give them support. A little often goes a long way.

Remember that the site only deals with 501(c)(3)s. Those are organizations that have certain restrictions on how political they can get (although right-wing groups often break these rules or dance on the line). When donating to campaigns or parties, use your best judgement. Also keep in mind that other types of organizations may not give you tax benefits for your donation.

2- Pay attention to local issues. The wins are a lot easier at that level because your voice/vote/power/money has WAY more power than on a national level. I don't care if you're in a red, blue, or purple state, you can change. Plus it's a lot less tribal at a local level. Look at how many places that voted for Trump raised the minimum wage. If you're in a small state, check it out here. Look at your local chapter of the Democratic party, Working Families Party, or Green Party. Whatever you feel best about. Read the local news. I know it's boring, but spend five minutes reading headlines or a full article you find interesting. Remember that newspapers usually use the inverted pyramid structure. THE IMPORTANT STUFF IS AT THE TOP.

3- Meet people face to face. Humans (even those that pretend to be otters online) are a social species, so getting together with people feels good. Check out the map here for volunteer opportunities, even if they aren't connected to political parties. Get to know your neighbors. Focus on the shit you agree with.

4- CALL YOUR PUBLIC SERVANTS!!!!! This is one of the most important and the easiest. If you call someone, they assume 1,000 people agree with you. So if 10 folks call, that's 10,000 votes/donations/volunteers they are scared to lose. Find out who they are and give them a ring. If your read your local or national news and you see some bullshit going down, CALL the FUCKERS. This is where you can track state bills you're passionate about. There are a LOT of sites that track federal laws. Google "tracking legislation" and pick the site that has the design that's easier on your eyes. Hell, Bing that shit.

Remember to pace yourselves. Do what you can with what you have. If you do one or two, that's awesome. Once you get going maybe you can get more active as you feel like it. Activism is good for your mental health, and the more you do it the easier it gets.
