Turbo Fat is out now!

🎉My first Steam game "Turbo Fat" is out today!🎉

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2213410/Turbo_Fat/

It's a puzzle game similar to Tetris, but with tons of wacky characters, crazy levels, and all new gameplay which incentivizes building boxes instead of clearing lines.

This is the biggest project I’ve ever tackled, even more so than Monster Mind. I wanted to take the lessons I learned from that game and explore ambitious ideas, like making it easier for fans to engage. Many of you expressed a desire to translate Monster Mind (which is VERY hard!) or create your own monsters (also quite challenging). With Turbo Fat, I’ve made those dreams a reality!

✨So what does Turbo Fat do differently?

* Fully translatable (it's already been translated into Spanish by a dedicated fan!)
* Design your own monsters (i've already added countless fan creations to the game!)
* Human-readable dialogue (cutscene files resemble movie scripts, with fun emotes!)

As someone who started developing in Flash, I never imagined I could make a game like this outside of that platform. It’s been a hard journey, but I’m incredibly proud of what Turbo Fat has become.

Anyway I hope you’ll check it out and enjoy the experience! Your support means the world to me.

It's a neat game, the squishing mechanic is a pretty clever take on the tetris formula. Great job!

Thanks, yeah the squishing formula really shakes things up and lets you do some silly things you should never do in Tetris! But in Turbo Fat it's OK... at least a little!

The game is really impressively polished! It's taking me a bit to get out of the Tetris mindset for it(I never remember I can make boxes with 3 pieces), but I'm having a ton of fun.

I love how my mini Elazul looks, and the story is very funny. I especially like that you give us multiple choices on what to say, so it adds some replay value to see what jokes the other choices will have.

Ha ha yeah, some of the options are very silly and some are kind of mean! But I tried to make them all a little funny, so nobody's feelings get hurt or anything like that~

Thanks for trying it out, I really appreciate it! I hope you have a good time with it

The trailer looks fun, the price is affordable, and I remember your other game before. Sold.

Thank you, I hope you have a fun time with it! Don't forget you can turn down the difficulty in the settings menu if it's a little too much. The gameplay can feel a little weird at first!

It is a little too much for me, yes. Felt like a complite smooth brain plaing it.
Quick descision making is not one of my forte, I couldn't finish your old flash game without getting Abra absolutely hammered.

But well, it is mostly a me issue.

If you turn the speed all the way down, the pieces literally never drop, so you don't have to stress about thinking quickly. But I totally respect if it's not your kind of game! Thanks for giving it a shot, it means a lot to me 💜

Having a great time, this is a really inviting and fun to master take on Tetris. It’s all so fully fledged with adventure mode, the colorful vibe with the catchy ost. Love to see the little guys in all the scenes, the customization has so many parts and colors, so many designs possible, truly amazing work!

Wow, thanks so much! Yeah the OST was an insane commitment, I wonder if I'll ever make another game with that kind of a soundtrack! It adds so much to the game.

The gameplay is really deep, honestly if you like this kind of puzzle game I think you could probably play just the vanilla Sprint and Ultra modes for a long time and keep getting better and better at making combos, making boxes, and balancing the two to optimize your score! ...But I think Adventure Mode really makes the game shine with the variety of game modes, there's so much to come back for.

I'm always worried there's an obvious strategy I missed or a way someone could demolish one of the score goals in the game... but I'll be really excited to hear if it happens!

That’s so cool to hear, gotta be amazing to put this out there and have others so passionate about it even optimizing it, I wonder how a speedrun would look like. Nice to try a puzzle game again and the gameplay makes you think on the fly, I always loved games with a training element to them like Wii, Ring Fit, this is like that on a mental level! I really like the time element of the grades that encourage you to get faster, I’d be interested to see how I can improve so thanks for recommending those modes (and the game as a whole)! Really enjoying all the dialogs also, those touches just make it very comfy yet engaging experience.

i've made the game somewhat speedrunner-friendly, as there ARE autoscrollers (levels which always take 2 minutes) but I think they should be avoidable, as there are a lot of alternatives. I think an any% speedrun would probably take 10-30 minutes, you can get to the end of the game very quickly! it's designed to let you skip a ton of levels if the easier content is too easy for you

Sweet, it’s cool you give the flexibility to choose the kind of experience you get. I like when games can be experienced in short sessions, with variety of modes, unlocks, maybe updates now and then like Party Animals (my go to game, it’s such a blast every time). Thanks for the advice!

Played a few rounds and it looks pretty good. Made myself a little kobold ant avatar? It is cute ^^

Love the squeeze mechanic! Something I have not seen before like this.

For essentially $5?  Why not?  It looks silly and I will be trying it.

Thanks, I hope you have fun with it! You can adjust the game difficulty in the settings menu if it's too much at first. It can take some practice to wrap your head around!

Yeah, it's definitely a different scheme than like Tetris or anything like that.  But I'm sure I'll get used to it.

i played this for about 2 hours last night just doing the tutorials again and beating the first training mode. letting it cook in my brain definitely helped coming back to it. i really appreciate having the speed settings since i don't do very well at fast block placing games.
argonvile
2 months, 2 weeks ago
Oh that's great! The difficulty settings go extremely slow if you really just need time to puzzle things through.

You can always turn them back up later once you get some practice in, but you won't miss anything if you leave things on slow mode!! Games are supposed to be relaxing, after all~

Played it for a bit, super fun!

I'm a bit confused about the squish mechanic works, I've found myself unable to do it sometimes -- Is it that the space below has to fit the squished piece exactly?

Also, I was playing for a bit and the game kinda just crashed on me randomly :<
argonvile
2 months, 2 weeks ago
There's a squish tutorial that explains the mechanics of it, but you pretty much have it! the space below has to fit the squished piece, and there has to be a straight line down to it

I'm investigating the crashes this week, and I'll merge in a fix this Friday which fixes MOST of them! One of them might be a bug in a library which needs to be updated. Sorry about that, and thanks for the report!!

Tutorials are for nerds!!

jk, I should go back in and try it XD

Also don't sweat it dude. Games are notoriously like this <3 I'm just happy for you that you got to release such a cool project! The Soundtrack is like, SO good too <3~

I already bought a gift copy for someone haha

> I already bought a gift copy for someone haha

Oh dang that's so awesome of you, thanks so much 😀 I hope they enjoy the gift!

I put in a new patch this morning which should make the game way more stable, so hopefully the game doesn't crash anymore!

I'm kinda curious like, what you might of done to achieve that o.o

I am still trying to find time in my life to get into game dev efforts myself so topics like these always interest me

are you wondering the kinds of code changes i made to avoid the crash, or are you wondering like how i made the game in general, or how i release those changes to steam?
