In a previous journal I said that if you were disappointed with the Knuckles series, it was your fault. And I stand by that stance. I also said that I didn't find the series to be a complete waste and that it was just a matter of not having high expectations. And I stand by that stance as well. However... after giving the series another look, I realize why I've almost put it out of my head.
Let's see, we have a series of only 6 chapters, and each chapter lasts approximately 20-30 minutes. Still, the series seems to last longer, and this happens basically for one reason: The series is boring.
For a moment I'm going to forget that I was once a huge Sonic fan and that I'm also completely ignorant of his lore. For a moment I'm going to focus solely on the universe that the Sonic movies propose to me.
I have no problem with human characters having their place in this new Sonic universe. In fact, I have no complaints about the wedding scene in Sonic 2. Now... When I read the synopsis of the Knuckles series, I already had an idea of what I was about to see and I tried to imagine a story of Wade and Knuckles living together a fun adventure where each one would learn something from the other. A simple premise, but one that can work if done correctly.
The problem... is that it was not done correctly.
The series, despite its short length, manages to cut out the interesting parts and extend the boring monologues of the characters. Seriously, from episode 3 the series abuses monologues that, far from causing me any kind of interest, end up working as a sleeping pill if I watch the series alone or as a very uncomfortable moment if I watch the series in the company of someone else.
The musical in episode 4 is simply the worst thing about this series. Look, I understand that within the Sonic fandom this type of "shitpost" is funny, but when you take these jokes to a product aimed at a more casual audience, and you also make it last more than 20 minutes, it's not funny anymore, it's annoying. I watched that episode with my family and I really wanted the earth to swallow me up because of how uncomfortable everyone looked.
Now, let's talk about the characters.
Knux and Wade seem okay to me, I think they both have their well-defined space, but I would have liked Knux to have a better character development, because the plot develops Wade more.
Wade's family... is okay, although his sister seemed like a very annoying character to me and the fork joke honestly didn't make me laugh, rather it made me angry.
The character of Jack Sinclair simply shouldn't have existed. From the moment he appears, he is a character who does nothing but talk about himself and we never know if he is really telling the truth, because as I said, the series is based on doing monologues and showing very little. The only function of this character is to give his hat to Knuckles, because his plot with Wade is simply idiotic.
I think the villains are the best of this series and curiously they are the ones who participate the least in the plot. The two agents who pursue Knuckles are fun to watch and I think they have good reasons for doing what they do, but after chapter 2 you don't hear from them again until the last act of the series!
But the one who gets the worst part is the main antagonist, "The Buyer". A character as mysterious as he is interesting because of how little we know about him, but he barely appears and his motivations are confusing. All this takes away from the excitement of the final battle. Because it is not just a matter of making a nice fight. You have to prepare the context so that this last battle is truly exciting.
Anyway, I'm going on too long. The Knuckles series was a failed experiment. Visually, it's great that the CGI maintained the cinematic quality, but the sloppy writing has left a very bad taste in my mouth and this doesn't help me get excited about Sonic 3.
I hope Paramount is more careful, because it will depend on Sonic 3 whether this universe continues or it all ends here.
