I've always followed that if someone is telling you what you can't draw, they should be ignored. They can't own an idea and they can't own a species, copyright be damned. Adoptables and OCs have always confused me- someone is trying to sell or gatekeep the right to draw and think about a character? What? You're not in my head, stop it.
Art is a form of expression, does it really matter who draws a character, what they depict them doing? If it did, all our careers would collapse on us, people would start defining what can and cannot be created, arguing what crosses what lines, what the rules and thresholds are, companies would be able to win insane interpretations of copyright law and we would no longer be free as artists to create art.
Sure, for sake of livelihood you can establish who can and cannot make money with productions of a character, but if you censor someone for using them, who gets to decide the consequences?
Fanart and parody (as long as it's not created with malicious intent) should always be tolerated, for the alternative is to prevent and punish artists and creators for creating. What you choose to draw is your choice. How others choose to react to your art is their choice. It doesn't have to affect you, and it doesn't have to affect them. Not to say that art, like words, are not free of consequences, but if you are not creating art with the intent to harm someone, the issue does not lie with you. If someone starts trying to break down who you are as a person, your livelihood, your comfort, being plain hateful, you know. Don't let it get to you. If they can't treat you with respect, and are trying to damage you, why should you hold yourself to their standards?
