UPDATES! Ask Me Anything!

by
YO FOLKS~! I've been wanting to be more active in furry spaces these days, but it's been hard to dedicate the time to do so. I also feel like things have been fractured in the furry world these days - I noticed a lot of folks tend to retreat to private circles and stuff. Or am I just projecting xD

In any case, YO WUDDUP?

Here's what's been on my plate these days.

TFOL!
Vixel and I have been making strides on our game these days! Finally getting more campaign progress in, and solving some bigger system problems that have been plaguing us for a bit. And the future of that game is gonna be NUUUUTS! I've got some crazy ass things planned, and I can't wait till it's all in!

We've been working with an environmental artist for our Act 4+ content, as that will introduce a unique and larger area. Super stoked! This sorta thing will add a whole other level of experience/lore/feel to the game :> Plus of course, raunchy stuff!

Oh, we're on Subscribe Star now. Patreon is still around too

3D Shenanigans!
I've kinda halted on 3D stuff for a bit due to a few reasons...

1) TFOL stuff has been keeping me busy.
2) Patreon has been a lil sketchy with their ban hammer recently.
3) Blender 4.0 broke all of my rigs =(! I could still work in older blenders, but newer smutbase models were in 4.0+ and it was just something I was dreading.

BUT, I've gone ahead and updated all the models :> And I've been messing with a fun Judy Hopps model! She's a lot more vanilla, so my recent 3D shenanigans has her featured. I'll be posting that eventually. Till then, if anyone's interested and hasn't already purchased it, I have a giant mega PWYW collection of 3D Smut here!

Bun-Statue!
The whole project was super enlightening to go through! And the sales have been going great too! I've sold about half of the stock so far. There's about 70 left? Something like that.

I recently got the premium boxes delivered as well, and they came out awesomely! Really slick, well worth the wait and research. Rigid boxes were for-sure the way to go :>

I am thinking about closing the shop for a bit though. Shopify lets you freeze/disable your shop and re-start it whenever! Since sales have slowed and they still charge a monthly fee, figured I might close it down for a bit and reopen later. So consider picking one up soon if you were interested!

---

Anywho that's about it for me art-wise. I've been doing a lot IRL to be more active and exercise, and general house maintenance stuff. The backyard has gone through a lot of work and is now a pretty awesome place to relax =)

But like I said, it'd be cool to be more present on websites again. So ask me anything! Artist of nearly 18 years, Animation and Furry freelance for about a decade, and game dev for about 5 years. I like being a resource, and I've got a bit of experience, so ask away!

I have only played 1 or 2 chapters of TFOL a while ago. I originally bought it for the lewd stuff, and maybe a fun little game, but the conversations and interactions between characters and all those little stories is what hooked me in the end. I loved everything about the game so far and I am sure you're gonna make it even better in the future!

<33 Thanks! That's awesome to hear :>
It was so much smaller back then xD, like, of a concept. But now we know pretty much exactly what we want with it, AND THINGS BECAME COMPLICATED lmao. They weren't kidding when they say "keep it simple" x)

I can imagine!
I also have a project going, and it's probably going to take 10 years in the pace I am working on it xD. I wanted to keep it simple too, but things get out of hand very fast when you get the right ideas!

What is your favorite pastime outside of furry hobbies?
Do you still go to cons?

:D I'm just glad you're still around after all this time . I've been following your content since, well pretty much the start of your IB profile, glad you have you here still! <3

Daaaaaamn been a while huh? hahaaaaa. Honestly hate getting older, it's the worst lmao.

HMM, Well I do play a lot of games, probably not a big surprise x). But I've been digging gardening/small landscaping stuff these days. And I got an E-bike :> so that's been fun to fuck around with. Honestly, I gotta just like >live more<. Something that becomes more apparent the older you get :| OH, I COOK these days. Like hella cook lmao. I've always loved food, so being able to make some of my favorites has been SOO rewarding :>

Con-wise, I always hit up BLFC :> I've got a group of buds and we meet up regularly there. But I've been wanting to kinda get back into the scene, I'm just wary on super busy cons these days. Convenience is a lot to me haha, I reallllly don't wanna have to WALK to and from the con space, or wait super long lines, or have limited dumb food options xD! That said i'll be at Another Fur Con in a couple months :O Something new and kinda small I'd imagine.

Despite how active I am online in the community on both of my IB accounts, I have never been to a con, I'm kind of a bastard of a furry XD.  I love cooking too, but I also fucking HATE shopping, so I picked up "Hello Fresh" again a couple months back and it has brough a little bit of joy back into my life. Making things I've never made before is so fun :) hopefully you can get some of that "living" out while still enjoying your furdom!

who is your Least Favorite Character? from your own characters!
Carrot
5 months, 3 weeks ago
Hmmm! Hard to say. Usually for me, a character I don't like, usually just means I don't know who they are yet. So like in our game, we've had a few critters that are relatively flat, or haven't had enough time/thought put into them. So to me, they're less interesting. But once I put more time into them and flesh them out, they'll definitely grow on me :>

We've got a wolf character that isn't in the game yet, and I had a rough idea of who he would be. I've probably re-poked that concept 3 or 4 times over the past couple years, and still wasn't satisfied on anything. Only recently did I start to land on something that felt right for him, and he feels good again :>

Whereabouts did you come from
On a serious note though, when you first started as a furry artist did you have making your own video game as a potential goal? Or did the idea for making just spring up over time?
Has making some kind of independant animated series ever crossed your mind? What would it be about if you ever did decide to try that?

What's your favorite cereal brand?
Carrot
5 months, 3 weeks ago
xD! Well born in California but grew up in Colorado.

I actually never considered game dev as a route :O. I've always loved video games, but when I was going to art school I really wanted to do feature film animation. (but I went to school for 2D animation, so extremely slim chances of 2D film feature animation gigs lol). But after art school, every legit professional gig I had was in games. Even still, I didn't consider doing a game up until several years ago.

I've always dug the like "manipulation"/communication relationship between artist and viewer, so really it was only a matter of time till games became something I'd try. Back then I'd take a month off of commission and pursue something I've wanted to try, or learn, and one of those was a visual novel thing. I made a lil experience AND WAS PRETTY DAMN HOOKED. The possibilities were endless, that's when the game stuff was solidified haha.

I haven't ever considered a TV show/series. But something i have always wanted to do is music videos! I've always loved coming up with visuals in my head to awesome music. These days I'll make animatics when I can to some of my favorite music, usually musicals. It's always for fun and story board practice, I haven't posted them, but I prolly should.

I'm not big on cereal, BUT I DID FIND THIS AT COSTCO RECENTLY? https://www.morningsummitfoods.com/products/morning-sum... THIS SHIT IS SOOOO GOOOD. Expensive, but goooood.

Hey there buddy ^^

Yeah things are fractured more so now than ever in the furry space. Likely to do with the bigger economic picture. I’m still hanging on pretty strongly in spite of it.

Do you plan to upload any of your game content or keep it secret? I don’t mind regardless, as I am also a really busy chu~
Hope everything is well with you and am glad you are still around these days :3

I wish you the best of luck!

Hayo! Kinda nuts we've known about each other for like, over 15 years? more?

Yeah good question! I mean, once upon a time, it wasn't too many assets? But now there's a fuck ton. I could easily upload some just for fun or w/e, Honestly I don't even know where I'd start at this point lmao. I don't mean to keep things secret, but I HAVE been doing so a lot lately, even on patreon xD. I've just got these things in the works that'll be REALLY cool to experience fresh, without having any idea what we're doing xD.

But that's not the right mindset for a in-development-crowd-funded-game.

But yeah, good to hear from ya!

I started following you a little bit before work on TFOL started, when you were doing comms and sketches more often, and I've always wanted to order a picture! I know you guys have been incredibly busy with the game (and recently into your 3D wares!), so I've always wanted to know if there was ever a chance at a commission possibly when The Forest of Love reaches gold dev status.

Also, curiously, how did you and Vixel meet? I somehow found you both individually, funnily enough!
Carrot
5 months, 3 weeks ago
Honestly commissions are all the more fun the more I don't do them xD so whenever I do randomly open, it's always a treat! I'll definitely get back into them at some point. Honestly my drawing chops have withered a bit, I'm a lot slower than I used to be haha. I could do with some study sessions x)

He actually commissioned me a good amount back in the day. We met up at a couple cons and hung out 'n what not. Eventually game dev came up once or twice, and I knew he had previous experience. Some years later, I messed with my own mini VN and then I was like, OH MAN VIXEL LETS MAKE A GAME. He wanted to get a bit more used to unity before jumping in. Several months later he reached out, and here we are!

Big fan of tfol! That's how I found you, actually. I've been very interested in becoming more active in the furry art scene but I've been struggling with art block on and off. I'm going back to school for a degree in game dev and getting high marks, but that takes some creative spoons, and as a result I have trouble working on personal projects.

I guess my question for you is, how do you do it? What keeps you going? Is it personal reasons? Community feedback? Sales? A combination of things? I could see myself working on projects similar to what you have going on, so I'm curious to hear about your experience of what they require.

When you were first getting started, what did you struggle with the most? Did you have any reservations about working with nsfw topics, and if so, what did you do to accommodate that? Personally, I'd like to think I'm a pretty sex positive person but I've had people find my nsfw accounts before and ended up promptly nuking them to save face. I know I have a few friends I want to keep currently that are sensitive about nsfw topics, so I'm hesitant to share my art, even in spaces they aren't in.
Carrot

Hayo! That's dope! Crazy reaching that point where the game has more reach than I had on my own, we definitely hit that point a while ago, but it's always crazy to meet folks through that!

HMM GOOD QUESTIONS. So back when I was starting, I was like, INFATUATED with art. And life in general wasn't plagued by so much bullshit, or at least i wasn't that aware xD. So I was young, oblivious, and had one goal. GET GOOD AT ART. So that's what I did. Awesome art friends helped a ton. Get a crew at your school, eat-shit-and-breath art/dev. Your surroundings ABSOLUTELY will influence your own actions. Hanging with friends who game and dick around? You're gonna wanna game and dick around haha.

Once I was out of school, definitely money-pressure was a good motivator. BUUT as I've gotten older, I've come across new challenges. Like my fucking BODY dying lmao. Too much drawing or keyboard hotkeys has fucked up my hands/arms more than once. Random bouts of depression/anxiety/shenanigans. I do my best to try to stay healthy, but there does always seem to be something coming up lmao.

The main thing that keeps me going (at all stages of my art journey) is the dream though. I wanna make dope shit that fucks people up. (in a good way). It's such a broad goal, so literally ANYTHING I do is a step on that path. As long as I'm making stuff and learning things, then I'll get there eventually. In some cases I've already achieved that, but I WANT MORE. Not gonna lie though, lots of the present day bullshit really gets in the way of thinking about those dreams.

When I first started art, I "struggled" with everything, but I never got frustrated. Like, I never had a knack for drawing, but it wasn't ever really a problem. I was fascinated by how much there was to learn. Each piece could tackle something new. And it just felt good having a journey worth taking. Frustration is often based on your mindset. You're expecting too much, and when you don't get there, it's frustrating. So I'd be great at going with the flow of stuff, and I'd surprise myself on the things I'd make.

NSFW art is actually what got me into art in the first place! I knew immediately that art was POWERFUL AS FUCK, I felt stuff I never felt before thanks to art. So I was like, HUH. Crazy. But I was closeted about the nsfw stuff for a long time. After college, when I was freelancing a lot, I was getting tired of lying to everyone all the time. So eventually I was like, I DRAW PORN. YEP. "coming out" to my friends and family was SOOO nerve wracking, but fortunately? I had a really good experience. Most everyone I know is super interested and enthused about it, want to see stuff, and even brag to others about me lmao. Which is dumb honestly but they get a kick out of it. I have had a friend or two that seemed a bit uncomfortable around the concept, which I understand too. I'm an artist first and foremost though, the porn stuff is just like, a specialty.

Tbh, I'd say if your friends are really the ones worth keeping around, they'd support you no matter what you do so long as you aren't hurting anyone. Even if they've had bad experiences, they'd understand that their experience is theirs, and yours is yours. Not saying disown your friends, but if it's something super important to you (like, your whole job/life) then you're hiding a large part of yourself to people you care about. But nsfw can also just be a fetish thing. Maybe it's only sex to you, then you don't have to go advertising it to everyone/anyone.

Job-wise, it could also be beneficial to keep that stuff under wraps. You bet your ass Disney is not going to hire someone if they've made porn of their IP. THAT SAAAID, the entire creative industry has been a fuckin' shit show the past several years and it's ONLLY GONNA GET WOOORSE BABYYYY. So all the more, "who gives a shit".

Thanks for such a detailed response! :O It's been on my mind recently to get some good art friends, so perhaps it's time I make that a higher priority. I read some of your other comments about making VNs and stuff and I've been intent on making something like that for around a year now. My attempts at finding people interested in working on something has fallen flat so far, however. I'm not going to give up, but I need to start broadening my horizons, I think.

I love your enthusiasm for the craft! I find myself getting pulled in many different directions for creative pursuits so it's difficult for me to sit down with one long enough to make a lot of headway, but I think with the right ducks in a row, I could commit. It's not just the first step that's difficult for me, but taking consecutive steps =w=)/ I suppose I do find myself prone to evaluate my work and hold high expectations for myself, and that does indeed lead to frustration. From your post, it seems you stay pretty excited about the possibilities without getting too caught up about small stuff, and that's very insightful for me.

I appreciate your recount of being open about nsfw stuff. I constantly flip flop between leaning into it or trying to make some sort of sfw branding instead, but it seems most of the VNs, stories, and games that really resonate with me have some level of nsfw (your stuff, Fek's work, Adastra, Shirokoi's work, to name a few). I suppose I do consider myself to hold openness about this stuff as a core value. Navigating friendships with the strictly sfw people has been like walking on eggshells though, and as wonderful people as they are maybe I really do need to consider whether I'm being true to myself here. It's been on my mind for some time, but hearing your perspective has been valuable, so thanks for sharing ^^ maybe if I ever end up actually making something I'll send it your way!

Actually, I do have two more questions if you don't mind.

Have you been paying for expenses solely with your art or do you have a day job/some other thing to bring in the cash to make it all work?

What sort of Unity tooling do you use? Any special libraries or add-ons that have made life easier? My program at uni uses Unity as well!

I’ve been self sustaining via furry stuff since college. I was doing commissions, while working some part time freelance gigs. But the furry freelance was definitely the bread winner. And we’ve been self sustaining since the games production as well, it definitely helped having my audience before going into a project like that. That let us keep going while our game didn’t have too many eyes on it.

I might say though - the prospect of being self sustaining on your work is always appealing to folks, but I have to exercise caution that one understands what that actually means, and what it means to their relationship to the passion. Art commission can be an excellent way to grow as an artist AND make a living, but only when your goals line up. But there are situations where money is the driving factor, and your art goals are no longer being nourished. That’s led many to burnout and eventually ditching the art gig.

I couldn’t tell ya regarding the unity stuff. I’m purely on the art/design/direction side. I’ll open it up occasionally to mock up some particle effects or something, but I don’t do anything fancy or use anything unique.

I've been gravitating ever closer to freelance work since graduating high school so it seems it would be difficult to convince myself to pursue something else at this point >w< I've paid rent by editing videos before so I know it's in there somewhere, but keeping the passion lit is absolutely the name of the game.

While offering commissions is on the table, my goal is to have more creatively sustainable projects that hopefully me and a potential audience could both appreciate. I understand it may be lofty, but I believe with the right amount of sustained work, it will come. It's determining what those sorts of projects might be that's been a big challenge for me. Starting from square one is daunting with so many options. I'd say I'd spend more time thinking it over, but I've been doing that for so long already. I'm ready to start... whatever it is.
Carrot
5 months, 2 weeks ago
Sure! Nothing wrong with starting and ditching stuff either.

I think I've got like... 10 or so game-doc ideas on my computer at the moment. Some ideas are worth pursuing, some you find out they aren't only later, some don't seem like it at first, but then you hit the AHAH! moment.

Starting can be in any form too, so choose the ones that require the least resources/commitment.

You can make an entire document on your own. You can do a ton of ref gathering and visual dev on your own too. That's more than enough to know if you think there's legs on something or not. And nothing wrong with spending a month exploring a couple of those etc. If ya have the time.
Carrot
5 months, 3 weeks ago
Also nothing wrong with having both! You can make a sfw and nsfw brand if they can be distanced from each other. And if the friends accept your passions, then it’s not like something that has to come up. If anything it’ll be a group joke that you’re the porn guy!

But yeah, glad I could help!
Carrot
5 months, 3 weeks ago
Oh, I was gonna mention, - You say “enthusiasm to the craft” and stuff - I need to paint the picture - I’m not nearly as energetic and prolific as i was several years ago. I’m like, generally tired, and kinda not really around the folks that I can appreciate these nuances with too often. But the thing about being a professional in something is you know how to do the things to make something objectively successful/good. So you don’t need the passion and fire to make a pretty picture.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s absolutely something worth being passionate and drinking the koolaid for. I’ve just been caught up with life shit, so if you’re there, I get it, and it’s been hard finding a fix for it. Definitely think good art homies would help!

This conversation was enough to get me to talk with them about where they stand and I ended up learning a lot about them and their values. Turns out they weren't quite as uptight as I imagined, so i'm happy to say there's been an appreciable weight lifted off my back ^^

Trading the fire for a skillset sounds like a common consequence of going pro, I suppose. Having things to reach for, a direction to work towards sounds promising though. I thought going to back to school might help with that and it's come up dry, but at least I'm able to do more than when I first started. Life stuff is absolutely a challenge, but here's hoping things stay sane enough to carry on relatively unscathed.

I totally appreciate the input, I've even been able to make some small moves in what I think is the right direction since you first posted this journal, so thank you for taking the time to be open here of all places ^^

Hay!!! I've been following you since before TFOL (not on this site) Waaayyy before, like when you did the whole 3 part art piece with the Dad and his kids and the abusive Vixen!

Was there ever anything you wanted to draw but knew you weren't good enough to pull it off yet? There are so many things I want to do but I feel like I am always just copying my fav artists instead of being able to draw my own poses and such. I really want to work as some sort of concept artist or something for a game dev studio but... I don't think drawing ponies will ever get me there. So like, should I draw humans? I always thought that drawing ponies was an easy way to start and would help me learn how all the artsy things work, but recently I just kind of feel like I'm at a standstill.

I feel you with the communities feelin like their own private thingy. It's either gigantic servers, or small groups that are impossible to get into, and it doesn't help that people from my past unfortunately hold a lot of power and have probably banned me from places I could find friends or mates in. But I've kind of just accepted that that's how it's going to be? And that I need to forge my own path?

Speakin of ponies, will you ever draw them outside of commissions? Will your 3D ever get a horse? Like, a real character horse not just a sotck model used to bang people
Carrot
5 months, 3 weeks ago
Hmmm… I think there’s definitely styles and concepts I definitely can’t pull off as well as I’d like to, but I can’t think of a time where I was supposed to or wanting to draw something, but didn’t think I could.

Part of the confidence comes from solid foundations of art/drawing. Contrary to some beliefs, you don’t have to draw a thing a hundred times to be able to draw it well. With enough reference, attention to detail, your first time drawing anything can come out as professional as anything else.

To that point, ABSOLUTELY YES draw EVERYTHING. Don’t just draw ponies. Don’t just draw humans. Draw objects, draw places, draw animals, draw actions, draw moments. There’s something to learn from in everything, and those things will absolutely reinforce your other subjects you’re passionate about. Draw a bunch of other stuff, and you’ll see you’ll probably draw ponies even better than you did before.

I drew ponies a lot for fun back in college. been a hot minute since though. I’ll probably draw them here and there for fun. Like I drew some granny smith smut a couple years back xD. 3D-wise, I’d LOVE to get a horse character! I actually got a rip of Maximus from Tangled (the KH3 version) - and set up a control rig for him very recently. Buuut due to patreon shenanigans, I kinda halted work with him since his dongs pretty detailed, and their rules are vague as hell. It would be sick to get my own OC made though! I’d have to design something…

Hi!

I recently Forest of Love game and I'm amazed at how much I enjoy it!  It's both cozy, cute, fun, and oh so smutty in all the right ways.  The erotic art is great!

Was wondering if forest of love would ever be at any conventions?  Not just furry conventions, but at indie game cons, or comicons in 18 and up sections or something like that?  I would love to stop by at a booth, would be so cool to see.

much love for your game!

Do indie game cons have an 18+ section? I've only been to one, and it was more industry oriented, so definitely not 18+ section.

And yeah! I've got some merch ideas that'd be fun to sell/table with, and Vixel and I wanna do a Q/A Game dev talk eventually!

oh, and to access what is done for Act 3 and the rebuild, is that for a specific tier on patreon, or is that any tier?

The 5$+ tier gets ya access to whatever builds!

Thanks a lot for the kind compliments btw <3 Glad you've been digging it!

I don't suppose you're familiar with the recent anime called Shangri-La Frontier, are you?

The in-universe game has a bunch of cute rabbit people and curious what you think of them...
