A deep question.

SO i have a old art friend who sadly passed last year,

One of the reasons i came back to draw was I had a few unfinished sketches, and a few ideas that i Never got to do for him as a gift.

Part of me as well would like to get good enough again to attempt to do a small simple comic with one of his OCs, remembering the good times.

Needless to say i am on the fence about this, deep down feeling its taboo, even though i know in my heart he would give his full support and tell me not to even ask next time,

What do you think? i feel it a shame to let his girls fade away from memory,

Would you like to people to keep your legacy going after you pass?

does saying its a tribute or fan art make it ok?

You're right when you say he'd tell you to go ahead and do the pictures, and to move forward with the comic when you feel you're ready. He was never really one to mind friends using his girls for their own stuff, as long as their natures were respected well enough. And I don't doubt you'd respect them to the best of your abilities, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I honestly think to that end that it should be fine, to do pictures, and eventually a comic as a way to keep part of him moving forward with the rest of us. But, in the end, mine is only a single opinion, hopefully more people can way in with their own feelings.

I believe it's up to his fans and loved ones to keep his legacy alive, whatever it may be.

Now I'm not saying to claim it as your own, THAT'S the taboo part.

But there is nothing wrong with paying tribute to him in a way you, and everyone who knew him would appreciate.  Having known him as well, I know that's what he'd want.

I would say that art created with love and respect isn't taboo, and that tributes are beautiful.
Pop culture is full of characters created by writers and artists who have passed from this world. Our creations are bigger than us, and so long as they live in the minds of those we have touched, they outlive us. This is the way of art.

And btw, the picture you did of Autumn may be my favourite. ^^

Not sure who specifically you're talking about but if you're referring to
EtherSaga
EtherSaga
, I'm sure he'd be enthusiastic.  He was supportive when I first started doing 3D stuff, and was enthustiastic when I posted stuff featuring his characters.

That said, I haven't really been able to bring myself to do anything with the models I made of his characters, because I bring them up and my chest hurts.

I understand your hesitation, but I believe that you're coming from a place of genuine desire to honor a friend and not "I want to usurp his legacy for my own gain."
It *is* an interesting question though.
I've often thought that if I did choose to retire, that I would like my characters to retire with me as well. After all, if I deserve a rest, then so do they. But passing is not retiring, and in that instance I honestly don't know what I'd prefer... and unfortunately I was not close enough to Ether to weigh in on what he might have wanted.
Ultimately, this is a question that only your heart holds the answer too - and therefor what ever you choose is the right choice.
