these days? I'm writing a story that is inspired by some of his pics, and I'd like to ask his permission to use one of those pics in the thumbnails when I start posting chapters.
I think the respectful thing to do is PM him, and if he doesn't answer... you're allowed? 6 years being off the grid seems like an OK statues of limitation for using someone's art. But then I'm not an artist, so I might not be the best person to know.

I've never heard of Toneless before, and I don't know how to get in touch with them either, but I very much agree with the previous comment. After leaving a PM, I would allow for a reasonable grace period, and then just let it ride. I would recommend leaving a note within the stor(y/ies) themselves that say that the thumbnail images are being used without permission, and then just leave the rest to fate. I would find it hard to believe that almost anyone would actually have a serious objection with this sort of overall conduct, given this situation.
