Defending Bonkers and How To Fix It

I've been thinking about Disney's Bonkers a lot recently due to the show's 30th anniversary - https://twitter.com/FlashTimberwolf/status/163067927842...

Despite what people say about it, I still like it. I grew up with it. It was one of my favorite Disney Afternoon shows. I'm just sick and tired of everyone bashing it. Yes, the show has its issues, but it's not worth all the hate it gets. The show was the result of a messy unorganized production. There's a video on YouTube that explains it all - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LCebwjyzEg

I highly doubt the series will get rebooted, but if it ever does and If I were in charge here's how I would fix the show:

1. Change the setting - Since Bonkers is similar to Who Framed Roger Rabbit, why not have the show take place in the same universe? Have it set in Hollywood 1997; 50 years after the events of the movie. Make Roger do a cameo once in a while. It's a world where humans and toons live together, but still toons have a hard time living in a human world when they're not making movies or TV shows.

2. Make Bonkers a little less zany - Okay, I'll admit he can be a bit obnoxious at times, so I would tone down his behaviour but still be funny.

3. Feature all the characters from the Lucky and the Miranda episodes - I would have both Lucky and Miranda work with Bonkers in the Toon Division. Plus all the side characters from both versions of the show be included.

4. Give Lucky and Sergeant Grating a reason for hating toons - The show never explained why they hated toons in general. Maybe they think toons shouldn't live with humans? It's not much but at least it's something.

5. Develop a relationship between Bonkers and Fawn - Bonkers always had a thing for Fawn Deer, but we never actually seen them together outside of their cartoon shorts. Have these two actually go on a date and develop a relationship.

So, those are my thoughts on what a Bonkers reboot should be. Feel free to comment on what you think and if there's anything you want me to explain more about my ideas.

Oh, I agree Bonkers was one of the best Disney Afternoon shows overall, and a HUGE showcase for Jim Cummings.

I have liked the character since I saw him in Raw Toonage. His show had tons of production problems from changing ideas and lack of focus. a great show could be made from the parts. The show originally was going to be a Roger Rabbit show and Bonkers was his replacement.SO the chances of Roger Rabbit being in a Bonkers show is nixed by corporations rights and expenses. Its one of the very few good outcomes of megamergers is different properties can interact.Though rewriting copyrightlaw and corporations being more forward thinking of profits and potential by creating art as opposed to making entertainment sausage as cheaply and as profitably as possible. which to be fair is the purpose of capitalist businesses which why they are kind of evil

As a kid, I loved Bonkers and thought Lucky Piquel was a jerk.

As a teen, I wanted Bonkers to be my boyfriend and thought Lucky Piquel was a jerk.

As an adult, I still love Bonkers, he'd be great to have an affair with (because I mean COME ON Bonker's is still super hot lol), but I'm not sure I could put up with Bonkers as a boyfriend.  He'd drive me nuts and I don't mean just in the sack, lol.

And I'm at the age where I identify with Lucky Piquel as a world-weary middle-aged man, but Lucky sure needs to work on his temper.  (I say that as someone who needs to work on my own temper, lol.)

I still prefer the Lucky seasons to the Miranda seasons.  I prefer Bonkers' design in those Lucky seasons, and Jim Cummings does an amazing job portraying the comedic chemistry and timing between Bonkers and Lucky.  (Then again, I used to have a crush on Miranda Wright. 🤭 )

If they remade/rebooted Bonkers, hopefully they have all the characters present.  Maybe my memory is fuzzy, but I don't recall Miranda and Lucky ever appearing in an episode together.  If the reboot were to take place in the same time as the original series, Lucky and Miranda along with Bonkers would make one great trio.  Bonkers would be the slapstick cartoon character, Lucky would play the "straight man", and Miranda would be the "voice of reason/the mediator".

OR...maybe the reboot would take place years after the original series where Marilyn would be grown up.  It would be interesting to see how Disney works with the Piquel family dynamic if they were to reboot the series years later.  Would Marilyn be working as an officer and be Bonkers' new partner in the Toon Division?  Would Lucky and Dyl still be married, or divorced but working on reconciling differences?  Would Lucky be the police chief, or retired?  So many great and amazing new directions a new series/reboot could take.

Of course. ❤️ Then again, with modern Disney being modern Disney they'd probably lack the imagination required to make a new Bonkers series great.  It's up to us writers and artists to continue the series, even if just as a graphic novel or even concept art.

Shit, I should do art of the cast as aged by 10-15 years! 😳 OMG, once I take a nap I will do just that! 🥹

I would love to see that. And I agree that we the fans have the imagination and talent to make a good series.
