Hey all, I want to say thanks to the many people who have been interested in asking about requests recently. That said, I want to set the record straight and to confirm that I am stopping doing free requests, at least publicly anyway. I was originally planning to was only stop until after Christmas/New Year, But there's a chance I may stop altogether (except for one-off occasions). I will be keeping them open to close friends only (and people I trust).
There are multiple reasons for this. One of them being that I want to prioritise my own projects and ideas. I have a backlog of stuff that I want to finish up.
Another reason, and I would argue a major one, is that I have experienced more than a few examples of people thinking they are entitled to my time and effort and only see me as a free workhorse. Dont get me wrong, I have more occasions where the requesters have been nice and fairly patient with me, with some awesome ideas to boot, but the bad ones... yeah not fun.
Here's a list of some scenarios which really stick out to me. I wont name any persons in particular but if they are reading this then they know who they are and I dont care.
CONSTANT PESTERING: Some cases occur where, once a request is noted, I am then constantly badgered for days (daily sometimes) on the status of the persons' request(s). This has gotten to the point where I have been tempted to and in some occasions requested payment to get these people to - just to be blunt - shut up!
JOIN & DITCH: Cases include someone joining my Discord server, making a request (or a few) and then ditching the server, never talking to me again, whether they receive it or not. One case included an individual who requested a comic who then left after I can only assume was me taking too long to complete it. Its still unfinished. Moving forward I make comics paid commissions when I open them due to taking so long
GETTING PUSHY: There have been moments where certain requesters will request content on a subject matter I either dont like or dont agree with and wont take no for an answer. Then follow up several days later with other ideas. There is at least two examples of this I remember.
Then there is this exchange I had with someone on DeviantArt one time (this was only a day after I told them I noted their request)
Them: Hey how's it going?
Me: Oh, hey everything is going fine, how about you?
Them: Oh sorry I meant my request
Whether its me or some other artist; Never... Ever... Do this...
Thats basically some of the examples I have in my head right now and yeah, these will probably be the reason I stop doing free requests altogether. Although I might reopen temporarily from time to time. I'm sorry if some of the stuff above makes me seem like an arsehole. Just wanted to get this off my chest.
