As much as I’m generally against the idea of a witch hunt, sometimes a situation becomes so severe that it would be wrong not to name & shame.
Some of you may know of Drew, he ran a twitter account on my behalf some time ago now (more on that later) and also reposts much of my work to e621. To be completely clear, he doesn’t work for me. Indeed, we’re not even friends.
There was quite a bit of speculation when the twitter account went down, but I’ve finally reached a stage that I’m willing to speak openly about what happened. There’s only so much you can give someone the benefit of the doubt, after all.
So, I had multiple occurrences of Drew giving my telegram details to minors. It’s generally easy to identify this by mannerisms & the way they type. Typically, when confronted about it, they’ll own up. So I’d block them and move on. But after this happened a few times, I confronted Drew about this. It turns out that he had both been impersonating me (even if only through omission, i.e. not correcting people when they assumed it was me, and the fact that he didn’t sign off the tweets in his name) and also having inappropriate chats with minors. I had asked him for the login details, so that I could check that nothing untoward was going on in the messages, but he refused and became incredibly confrontational. Eventually, I gave up and demanded he delete the account.
So that was the first instance where his true colours really shone through. I didn’t do anything major. But my opinion of him certainly changed after this. Initially, I’d thought he was an alright guy, that was just a huge fan who enjoyed sharing my work, he seemed friendly enough after all. Sure pulled the wool over my eyes. But after this, I realised it was probably just a way he could get attention and reach more people, including minors, online.
This brings us to now. A couple of evenings ago he’d passed on the details of someone who was interested in doing some voice acting for future animations. I jumped into a voice call with them & quickly determined that they were quite young, or at least seemed so. I told them that I’d need ID to confirm their age before working with them (I only hire adults for these roles, for obvious reasons), which regrettably confirmed that they are, indeed, a minor. The thing that makes this abhorrent, is that they admitted that they’d been talking to Drew for a while and is absolutely obsessed. They have exchanged nudes and this person truly believes that they’re in love and is convinced that nobody else could ever want them. Because, of course, that’s exactly how a predator would want their victim to feel.
I cannot accept this as just “an honest mistake”. I’m truly disgusted, which is why I’ve felt the need to write this statement and publicly wash my hands of him. Whilst I don’t believe it a good idea to start harassing or threatening him, I just wanted my position on this to be very clear. I do not condone this type of behaviour. People that do condone this are a detriment to the community and severely make me question whether or not I want to continue. I now have some serious soul searching to do.
