My thoughts on AI Art

The short version: I'll continue supporting human artists because I like it when people feel good and because AIs are dumb (not as a concept, but rather intellectually limited).

I've actually tinkered a bit with AI art just to see what would happen and let me just say, people who say "you just type in a prompt and it makes it" are not entirely wrong, but are vastly underestimating the effort it takes to make an AI cooperate. Unless you give it a very detailed and structured prompt, it often discards half of what you write and proceeds to puke all over the proverbial canvas. (Or at least the ones I used.) And even then, it usually takes some amount of iteration for the AI to behave and give you something presentable, and even the presentable ones often have something off about them. (If you think you suck at drawing hands like I do, don't worry, AIs are even worse.)

AIs don't have the same understanding and train of thought as humans; we create art based on what we find appealing and what we want to see. AIs have no such vision, and are only as good as the things they learn from, and they will not understand what you want. Meanwhile, an actual artist you commission has creative thought that allows them to try and bring your vision to life in a way that you like and are - hopefully - open to suggestions on what specific things to change.

Also, a lot of AI art services are paid anyway and I'd rather have my money go to someone that I know will get the job done right the first time ;)

That being said, I'm not 100% opposed to AI art. I think it's actually kinda funny to toy with and see what the AI can produce since it'll often be something no human would do unless they're under the heavy influence of hallucinogenic drugs, in the same way that AI writing is amusing to read.
