, getting a message about SFM content being disallowed, and he has a week to remove his content unless he can prove he made the models he used.
Pardon my French, but WHAT THE FUCK???
Did we not already have a mass public outcry back in 2018-2019 when they tried this shit last time? Didn't they back off from SFM content creators because they realized it's different from just a screenshot? If anyone can find the information and DM it to me, I'd appreciate it, but I'm still gonna rant because including Source Filmmaker as not part of the ACP is, to be quite frank, prejudiced and invalidating, and I speak as a fanfic writer and digital colorist.
Let's break down why this is wrong, shall we? I'm quite certain there were journals like this back then, but I'm going to repeat it.
For most people, SFM is their gateway to 3D content. They are inspired by what they see on SFM and often go to Blender to make their own models once they get the hang of SFM. By removing said content, there's less artwork for people to be inspired by, which means less artwork is made as a result. It literally puts the effort of 3D art in danger just because most people rely on public use models. Limiting exposure to new people is the start of a vicious cycle.
Let's face it people: Twitter, DA, and FA aren't really the best sites to host art, especially if you're doing SFM porn. Inkbunny is the only porn-focused site with a good blacklist feature, so you're quite literally blocking people from using one of the best sites to host.
And if people are trying to make money off of it? Guess they can't find any clients on Inkbunny, there goes that potential money!
Now let's get into the technical issues...
SFM is FUCKING HARD people. And even HARDER to do well. The models do not have collision detection, requiring you to very carefully position characters in maps to avoid clipping. It's not just as simple as 'move this arm, move this hand, move this leg, done!' Positioning alone can take a very long time. They aren't action figures, it's more like manipulating figures made of clay. You risk deforming them if you fuck it up. Even if you have an Undo button, it's still taking a lot of finesse.
Then there's the issue of lighting. You have to manually place lighting nodes to cast shadows in the right places, sometimes losing where the node even is and redoing it. Lighting itself takes work to adjust, depending on if you want colored light, dim light, intense light, and such. You also have to balance the lighting work with the camera angles. If you move the camera, you may have to move the lighting again. Or vice versa, depending on where you want the light, you may need to adjust the camera after already setting it.
There's also the point of manipulating props and particle effects. You again, have to position them just right to make sure the camera captures what is needed and avoid clipping.
Making a scene takes a lot of precision and/or bullshitting to pull it off.
THEN, there's POST-RENDERING. Even for still images, artists like Foxhound aren't done. There's color balancing to work on, additional lighting, filters... Some people literally take these exported posters and turn them nearly into paintings.
We aren't even talking about SFM animations here. That is even more stuff to deal with.
The idea of it just being similar to a screenshot ignores SO MUCH work. They devalue the time, effort, and attention to detail each piece takes, passing it off as unacceptable purely because the models don't belong to the artist.
Now let's get into THAT issue, shall we?
That. Is. BULLSHIT. The models are a resource that are manipulated as a part of a full piece. You still have to pose them correctly, fix errors with them (or just deal with them and compensate with a new angle), add the lighting, the effects, and post render...
What is art? Using resources and manipulating them to create a full piece.
If you are a writer, you use a keyboard and provided fonts. Those are resources. They don't disallow fanfics because people don't build their own keyboards or make their own fonts.
If you are a digital media artist, you have brushes, fill tools, and templates. Those are resources. They don't disallow art if you didn't create the brushes yourself.
SFM is ART people. Doesn't matter if it's not the most popular art form. How long do we have to fight this crap?! Yes, some people are kinda lazy with it for the sake of 'hurr durr horny' but there are a lot of people who put their heart into their work, and Inkbunny is once more kicking them in the nuts, behaving like an art clique rather than an art community.
SFM belongs on Inkbunny. No arguments, no debates. If you don't agree, you are welcome to unfollow me. If you do agree, I hope you share this around and maybe something can turn around.
