Hi kids! It's me again! Today we'll be talking about something you all love. Video games! No, I don't have them in the back of a van... this time. You can find this one on your own.
Today's game is Grow: Song of the Evertree. Do you like plants? Fluffy things? Bright colors? Impossible worlds? Gardening? Shota/Loli? If you answered yes to at least two more more this is a game you might want to try.
Essentially you are a small human who must regrow a gigantic space tree which sprouts entire worlds on its branches instead of fruit. You will then go into these worlds and tend the plants there to provide more life force for the tree, yourself, and the universe. Eventually people, including what kind of looks like Lombaxes, will return and you get to build sprawling towns for them and manage their happiness.
The game SOUNDS a lot more complex than it is, since they added a huge gardening mechanic, sprawling semi-open worlds, town building, and people managing. Still, it's all managed very well and organically. The concepts appear scary but boil down to simple choices and assignments after which things will pretty much manage themselves. You have the OPTION of microing every facet of everything or you can set it and forget it.
Choice is HUGE in this game. Do you want to do everything by hand, meet everyone, go into every store, paint every building? You can! Do you want to plop a bunch of things down and watch chaos make you a functioning society? YOU CAN! After lovingly hand gardening your first fruit world, you get the option to hunt down and mercilessly cuddle tiny fox/raccoon/deer children who will then be recruited to do all those tedious farming chores for you while looking sickeningly adorable in the process.
Speaking of adorable, just about ALL of the creatures DEMAND hugs. Both metaphorically and literally. You can pet almost anything with fur. There are giant fluffy cloud sheep who you can simply leap into their necks and nuzzle into intense fluff action. Your best friend and mode of transportation is a kirin of sorts who demands regular attention. From the lowliest doggopillar to the mightiest sky ram, everything can be pet and by god I'm going to try to do it.
So far as I can tell it's not a combat game and is more like harvest moon in fantasy space. Great for relaxing and "Just Being, Maaaan" when you need to unwind or want to experience the universe. I adore the trees and landscapes as well as the (comparatively) many furry races that keep popping up.
It can be rather saccharine at times, I will admit. The two main assistants look ripped from a preschool kids show and gave Uncle Marcus intense worry that he bought something designed for toddlers, but their personalities are fully fleshed out and grow on you pretty quickly.
I highly recommend it and it really makes you feel better when you're stressed or down. There's no rush to do anything, no real time limits, no one will scream into your ear about quests. you may be saving the universe, but the universe isn't going anywhere and isn't demanding you fix it right this second or all your friends die. You're the most important person in creation and it treats you like it, just happy to have you working to restore life and joy at whatever pace and in whatever form you like.
Aaaanyway, Uncle Marcus has gushed enough. Have you kids tried it? Will you? What do you think? Do you want me to do this again? Let me know.
Good gaming, kiddos. Now... I DO have some original copies of Sonic 3 in the back of this windowless van if anyone is interested.
