I think it has more to do with them not wanting to be paired up with randoms or certain kinks and fetishes (or associated with them as it may lead to a snowball effect of people creating/commissioning art with that character for that purpose).
I have it like, please just ask me but that rarely happens .-. maybe I should just do it like you've mentioned! But then theres the chance it never sees the light of day.
