It was 6:00 in the evening, and E.B. was in his room practicing his drums. The thrashing sounds of drumsticks tapping on cymbals and drums echoed throughout his room. E.B. was just about to do a big finish with the cymbals, when his door suddenly flung open. It was his dad. "E.B!" his dad yelled. E.B. put down his drumsticks and looked at his dad. "Hi, dad!" he said. "Son, I just got a notification from Amazon, and it says that my package has arrived. Do you know anything about it?"
"Yes," said E.B. "I ordered a stethoscope from Amazon last week." "A stethoscope?" his dad asked inquisitively. "Why did you order a stethoscope?" E.B. suddenly looked down at his fingers. He was ashamed to tell his dad about his... desire. But now, he can't hide it anymore. He must tell his dad. "Well, dad... you see..., " E.B. hesitated. "I... love... to... listen... to... heartbeats." He suddenly flinched, worried that his dad might label him a freak. But all his dad said was, "Oh."
His dad then closed the door, sat on his bed, and motioned for him to sit next to him. "Sit down, son," he said calmly. E.B. obeyed. "I don't want you to feel ashamed about your interests. You know I'm your father. And you're my son. I love you. And you can tell me anything. Absolutely anything." E.B. felt a little better after hearing his dad say that. So, he opened up. "Well, dad. I have an affinity for the sound of a heart beating. And that is why I bought a stethoscope. You see, ever since I became the Easter Bunny, I've had to work out to stay in shape. And my heart would always race. And I always wondered what my heart would sound like. Or someone else's."
His dad didn't look at him in anger or disappointment. Instead, in fascination. "I see. And you bought the stethoscope to listen to your heart, right?" E.B. nodded. "Well, son. I just have one question to ask you. Would you like to listen to my heartbeat?" E.B.'s eyes widened in surprise. He thought he was dreaming. But no! This is really happening! E.B. didn't hesitate. He said in excitement, "Yes!"
E.B.'s dad chuckled and began unbuttoning his shirt while E.B. himself pulled the new stethoscope from underneath his bed. He then put the ear pieces in his ears and put the bell on the left side of his dad's chest. THUMP-THUMP, THUMP-THUMP, THUMP-THUMP E.B. blushed as he heard his dad's heartbeat for the first time.
"What does it sound like?" his dad asked him. "BOOM-BOOM, BOOM-BOOM, BOOM-BOOM," he replied. E.B's dad chuckled. "Your heartbeat slow and steady," said E.B. "It beats only for you," his dad replied. E.B. took off the ear pieces and handed the stethoscope over to his dad. "Now, listen to mine," E.B. said.
E.B.'s dad took the stethoscope, put the ear pieces in his ears and put the bell on his son's chest. His eyes widened in shock. "Dad? What's wrong?" E.B. asked worriedly. E.B.'s dad didn't say anything for a full minute. Then, he finally said, "Your heart... it says... I am the best father in the world!" E.B. and his dad burst out laughing. E.B.'s dad placed the stethoscope on the bed and hugged his son. "I love you son! And thank you for being open and honest with me." "I love you dad! And thank you for listening to me." "And your heart!" More laughter. "But in all serious, E.B. Your heart was beating rapidly. Are you nervous or excited?"
"I'm excited!" E.B. exclaimed. "I love you dad! So much!" "I love you too, son! With all my heart." They both started laughing again. Ahhh, dad jokes. They never get old.
