My thoughts on Paw Patrol: The Movie.
Warning: This contains some mild spoilers.
When I first heard that a full-on theatrical movie was being made for Paw Patrol, I was both excited and a little concerned.
It would be pretty easy for Spinmaster to rush something together as a simple cash grab and essentially make the movie a really long episode. This could likely have earned them a decent return on investment as the movie would not have required much of a budget.
When I saw the first sneak-peaks of the movie, I got even more excited but was still concerned. They were tweaking the animation, giving it a higher-looking quality. This told me they were tossing a decent budget into this, and the movie at least won't be cheaply done.
However, this didn't squash my worries that somehow they would mess this up. Just because the animation was being "Upgraded" doesn't necessarily mean the content will be treated with such care. Just because the characters will look cooler doesn't mean they will be fun to watch.
As I saw the various trailers come out my concerns became less and less. Seeing a trailer showing one of the rescues being of a semi that ended up dangling off the side of a bridge precariously at least showed me that there was going to be at least some suspense. The same trailer also featured a moment of humor, so at least it wasn't looking bad.
The more previews I watched, the more hopeful I was that this was going to be a decent film.
Was I right on this thought?
Last night I got to find out!
This was the first movie I have seen in a theater since the Sonic movie back in early 2020. I went to a late-night showing (10:30 p.m.) with the thought that this is a kids/family movie, so I would not have to deal with a large crowd. Thankfully, this notion was correct, and only a few other groups were there.
It only took about ten minutes into the movie for me from having the "Please don't let this be a bad film" thoughts in the back of my mind to me just enjoying the movie. The first scene was what I expected it to be, the one featured in the first trailer. They didn't cover everything from this scene in the trailer though, so I in no way felt bored watching it.
It may be that I used to have a reoccurring nightmare about being on a road bridge that was collapsing, but I felt the scene was pretty suspenseful and that it was a great way to open the movie.
At this point, the "Upgraded" animation had won me over. Everything looked crisper and sharper than the show without them going as far as reinventing the wheel. Nice lighting effects are also featured.
Really great voice acting as well.
The film then manages to keep a really nice pace. It doesn't do anything that just feels like filler and packs lots of action in a way that can keep your attention, but not being overwhelming.
Reminder: This contains slight spoilers.
There is an origin story that long-time fans will love that really tugged at my strings. It also isn't the only emotional moment in the film.
I won't go on too much about the rest of the content other than to say that I was surprised that they made the rescues in the film have at least some level of peril in them. Nothing terrible, but for a movie aimed at kids, it doesn't totally hold back the punches,
Of course, although it doesn't give you an overdose of it, the movie doesn't lack cheesy humor and puns, It is a Paw Patrol movie, so of course, it has to feature some of it.
I will also say that the movie has a really great ending. I won't spoil it, but I will just say that it's probably some of the best action to come from the Paw Patrol franchise.
I have so many nice things to say about this film.
Amped up visuals that really make it feel like a movie. Great voice acting with a star-studded cast. Oh, the peppy pop-filled soundtrack also fits in nicely!
The friend I went to see this with also seemed to really enjoy it. He thinks the show is okay but isn't a legit fan like I am. His initial remarks were "They really pulled out all the stops on this. I expected it to be decent, but not for it to be this good.".
This movie definitely exceeded my expectations. I am so glad I went to see this on the big screen. It was definitely worth it.
I would give this movie a rating of 9.3 out of 10. Will this rival the best-animated films by the likes of Disney? Probably not. If you want to see a Disney classic, then go watch one.
However, if you want to see a fun-filled Paw Patrol movie, then you need to watch this movie.
