Xbox question

My old roomate has a need to play his games quietly, so he's looking for a headset. I've never owned an Xbox. I know there's a headset though that plugs into the controller, but does it play in-game sounds, or is it only for online chatting? Also his budget is rather limited. Would any USB headset do? Any recommendations?

the controler headsets only have one speaker and only play the xbox live audio calls, i dont know if usb headsets work on it but i have one, give me five minutes and ill have the answer to your question

edit: apparent answer: no, a usb headset does not work...to get it you'll likely have to plug a pair of headphones into the tv's own audio jacks, most tvs have such in the back or on the sides somewhere.

I use a pair of Tritons, they work well, corded, so no need for batteries, but you do have the cord. they are big, seal up the ears nicely, good sound quality. the model i bought was around $130, 2 years ago, it's the 720 model.
