So we went to get a second opinion (when you're talking used car money, you have to shop around).
Well, the audiologist was able to tune in and get sound into my left ear. The ear everyone had been telling me was dead for eleven years. I suppose the audio chart for the ear was so low everyone else just shrugged, but he knew how to tune the dials to get the frequencies to my brain.
It was weird. The brain literally forgets how to hear sound over time when it doesn't receive it, so to suddenly be getting it, and be having a conversation with it--it was like the ear/brain equivalent of walking on a leg that's fallen asleep for a long time.
Thanks to you all, we were able to put money down to get an ear fitting on the spot. Since both will be real hearing aids (instead of one being basically a walkie-talkie), it will be a bit more expensive. Also, they'll need a separate warranty and possibly a separate remote control (not android friendly :/ ).

I'm so excited. Not only will i get back hearing i've lost, i'll get real hearing back on my left side. Whoooo! :D
